Vytran intros optical fiber splicer with large diameter fiber splicing capabilities

USA: Vytran, a leading supplier of innovative optical fiber splicing and processing solutions, introduced the "LFS-4100," a new precision optical fiber splicer designed for use on fibers as large as 1.25 mm in diameter. The company will show the LFS-4100 at the LASER World of PHOTONICS exhibition in Munich, Germany, from May 13-16, 2013.

"Vytran has enhanced its established LFS-4000 splicer with greater splicing capabilities and an improved mechanical design to create the new LFS-4100," said David Douglass, Vytran product line manager. "The LFS-4100 can handle fiber diameters as large as 1.25 mm, matching the large diameter splicing capability of the industry flagship, Vytran's own GPX-3400 glass processor. In addition, at the request of customers, our LFS-4100 includes a full computer with a large screen, making it a very user-friendly, high-performance system."

Splicing large diameter fibers is particularly critical for applications such as fiber laser manufacturing and producing many fiber-based medical devices. The LFS-4100 uses proprietary filament fusion technology to create high-strength, low-loss splices on both standard and specialty fibers, including polarization maintaining (PM) fibers, photonic crystal fiber (PCF) and non-circular shapes. The system is ideal for volume manufacturing, combining a high degree of user process control with simple operation.

The LFS-4100 splicer is designed to work with Vytran's GPX-3000 Series of glass processors. As manufacturing processes move from development to volume production, the focus transitions from performance alone to performance, throughput and cost. When used with a GPX-3000 Series glass processor, the LFS-4100 can maintain the industry-leading splice performance of the GPX-3000 Series while reducing the total process time and minimizing cost.
