TEKTELIC delivers smallest and most-powerful complete LTE small cell eNodeB

Mobile World Congress 2012, CALGARY, CANADA: TEKTELIC Communications, a leading provider of high quality and high efficiency cellular radio solutions and 4G micro base stations, announced the availability of their smallest fully integrated micro eNodeB.

In conjunction with Mindspeed Technologies Inc. and the Aricent Group, acknowledged leaders in the 4G eco-system, the ultra-compact TEKTELIC LTE 2210 micro eNodeB is a full featured product that strikes a balance between output power, physical size, and cost with a 2x5W radio in just 8.5L and 7Kg form factor.

The 2210 LTE eNodeB is a complete solution that features a digital baseband system based on the proven Mindspeed baseband processor, with a fully integrated Aricent LTE eNodeB software framework. These two critical elements are combined with a high efficiency TEKTELIC radio that delivers 2x5 Watts of transmit power per antenna port in a 2x2 MIMO configuration. The 2210 LTE eNodeB design is ultra-compact, lightweight, and meets the most stringent environmental deployment conditions.

Most of the attention on small cells has focussed on indoor systems such as residential femtocells. However, for LTE to deliver its full potential, carriers require rugged outdoor units with higher power levels.

An Informa Telecoms & Media survey found 60 percent of operators believe small cells are more important than macrocells in LTE deployments. According to ABI Research 36.8 million small cells will be shipped in 2016, valued at $20.4 billion. This includes both indoor and outdoor small cells namely femtocells, picocells and microcells, but ABI Research’s data suggests that, by 2016 while indoor small cells will be 94 percent of total shipments, outdoor small cells will make up 64 percent of the revenue – emphasizing the huge potential of this segment.

“Aricent Group is pleased to collaborate with TEKTELIC Communications to deliver our proven software framework on TEKTELIC 2210 LTE micro eNodeB systems,” said Rakesh Vij, VP of Aricent Group. “Through recent LTE rollouts and trials, TEMs have recognized the demand for a wider range of eNodeB equipment to meet the specific requirements of global operators, and the TEKTELIC 2210 LTE line is a compelling solution for the highly competitive LTE market.”

While other LTE small cell eNodeB systems have been developed they are either considerably larger & heavier than the 2210, which limits deployment and significantly increases cost of installation, or they are lower power (often 2x1W or 2x2W), reducing ranging and user count. The 2210 is the first system to combine such high power radios into such a compact system.

“Working with Mindspeed and Aricent has enabled us to focus on our core expertise, building highly efficient Radios and Power Amplifiers, as well as fully integrated and compact, low cost base stations. Through this partnership we were able to deliver an LTE eNodeB product that meets very stringent Tier 1 vendor and operator requirements. This product comes ahead of the competition as operators around the world begin to address their capacity needs with small cell base stations,” stated Roman Nemish, TEKTELIC’s president. “Our deep rooted heritage in Radio and base station design allowed us to create a dual 5W product that is just 8.5 liters in volume that weighs less than 7 kg.”

The 2210 LTE eNodeB is targeted at the Tier 1 and 2 OEMs that wish to accelerate their development by focusing on their own value add and porting their application software.
