Sequans launches LTE program

CHICAGO, USA: Sequans Communications, the world’'s leading WiMAX chipmaker, made public its move into LTE and details of the LTE development program it launched earlier this year.

Sequans has been preparing for this move as part of its long-term growth strategy and has been steadily adding resources and headcount to support it. Sequans intends to develop products for both the LTE and WiMAX markets in parallel.

“Our success in WiMAX has enabled us to expand naturally into LTE, and we are ready to meet the needs of LTE equipment manufacturers with outstanding silicon and software solutions, building upon our significant experience with WiMAX operators and OEMs,” said Georges Karam, Sequans CEO.

“We have assigned a number of our key engineers to the LTE program and have hired others with deep experience in cellular technology, who have successfully developed LTE components that meet 3GPP specifications. Our LTE team will leverage our proven development methodology to deliver world-class LTE chips to this important market.

“Our WiMAX development will continue unabated, and we are looking forward to a very strong 2010 where our new generation 65nm SQN1200 family, the most highly integrated Mobile WiMAX semiconductor solutions in the industry, will gain an even stronger foothold in the market.

“We see WiMAX deployments ramping up sharply and expect that demand for our differentiated solutions will increase accordingly. Operators in Japan, USA, India, Russia, Malaysia and Taiwan, to name a few, will add millions of subscribers in 2010, and Sequans is ready to meet this demand. Sequans expects to continue adding resources to its LTE organization this year and will demonstrate its first LTE solutions beginning early 2010, in support of pre-commercial operator trials.

Clearwire could deploy LTE in addition to WiMAX

150 Indian cities to have WiMAX in 90 days

NEW DELHI, INDIA: Some 150 cities in India would have wireless broadband through WiMAX technology in just 90 days once the 20 MHz spectrum is allotted at the base reserve price of 250 million dollars (Rs. 1,010 crores) to four operators in each circle.

Each operator could serve 15 to 20 million subscribers with good quality service. But much would depend upon early implementation of the proposed auction of the spectrum for the service.

This perspective emerged at the WiMAX India 2009 conference being organized by Bharat Exhibitions. “India is ready for broadband experience” said C.S. Rao, chairman of WiMAX Forum India. “Wireless is the key to broadband” he said recalling the projection in the President’s address to Parliament setting 100 million subscriber target for broadband by 2014 and 20 million by 2012. The fact of India having a social demographics of over 600 million young people underlined the need for rapid roll out of broadband in the country, Rao pointed out.

Despite this national vision for broadband penetration, why the ground level progress so slow was, asked several telecom experts participating in the day long discussion. Telecom experts contrasted the huge push in cellular phone subscription to 14 million per month in June with the total users of a mere 6 million in broadband.

“Against over 40 percent penetration of cellphone at 450 million, Internet penetration is just 0.6 percent” regretted Naresh Ajwani, secretary, Internet Service Providers Association of India. “Roll out the bidding for spectrum. The delay is stopping India from developing” he said.

On the issue of poor broadband penetration despite huge WiMAX potential, Bharti Airtel group CTO Jagbir Singh found that price points “are not good and scalability is an issue.” He and several other experts who participated called for early conducting of the spectrum auction to get the WiMAX based broadband penetration roll out fast.

Jagbir Singh also expressed concern over backhaul costs that have become “a huge issue”. Several other speakers agreed with him on the backhaul issue, especially the problems being faced by service providers in getting right of way permissions from local authorities. “RoW cost should be near zero if rural broadband is to be affordable”, he added.

“Backhaul cost is killing us” revealed Mallikarjuna Rao, Head technology and network planning Aircel, adding that government intervention was needed to bring down the high costs of carrying and Internet bandwidth if broadband were to be available at affordable price.

On how operators and government could work together to reduce total costs to improve affordability for rural customers, A. Sethuraman, executive director of Huawei, a leading global telecom equipment company, listed several factors like smaller footprints, natural cooling, advanced technologies to save energy, could reduce the huge operational costs.

Converged platforms putting together optic fibre and microwave and use of multiple technologies in the same equipment were some of the available options. User end costs were also going down with many PCs and laptops now becoming WiMAX embedded. “New innovations in terminals combining WiFi and WiMAX” were also coming up he disclosed.

Sethuraman, Executive director, Huawei Telecommunication India also disclosed that a new technology by his company “CSR initiative” for rural India was available especially useful in connectivity in education.

WiMAX Forum has over 500 members. It sees India as a large market. IIT-Delhi hosts a WiMAX applications laboratory. That technology and equipment for commercial operation of WiMAX was already available, was underlined in the presentation that Motorola India country head for home and networks mobility business, Subhendu Mohanty gave at the conference.

He found great [prospects for future broadband penetration in the rising sales of PCs and laptops. Notebook growth has crossed 114 per cent last year. Worldwide 133 million broadband subscribers were expected by 2012 of which 70 per cent would use mobile WiMAX devices. “WiMAX is here, LTE would be available by next year” he revealed. LTE is a high speed wireless on GSM platform for cellphone services, faster than 3G. “WiMAX is a step towards LTE”, he said.

As many as 25 applications on WiMAX were already available. Low cost chipsets “critical for India” roll out of WiMAX were being provided by his company. He claimed “total cost advantage’ in using WiMAX for broadband expansion.

Calling for a “faster auction” of 3G and WiMAX spectrum, Neeraj Sonker, vice-president, Tata Communications defined the challenge in wireless broadband was to make business plan viable at an average revenue per user of four to five dollars per month. The equipment and technology must be looked at “differently” for India operations to make WiMAX affordable. The roll out should be such as to enable seamless transfer from WiMAX to EVDO(the cellular platform for triple play connectivity).

Through wireless broadband it was now becoming possible for housewives to work from home for providing many services notably as call centre operators, Sonker said listing several new openings that WiMAX was offering to broader user audience.

There should be 27.5 million WiMAX users by 2012, according to Bharat Exhibition Managing Director Sasidharan, organizers of the conference.

IMS over WiMAX: Opportunities for service providers and corporations

DUBLIN, IRELAND: Research and Markets has announced the addition of the "IP Multimedia Services over WiMAX: Opportunities for Service Providers and Corporations" report to its offering.

The IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) framework represents an integrated traffic of data, voice and video on the same networking infrastructure whereby the performance of all the three services are optimized. WiMAX holds great promise as the potential answer to IP multimedia for corporations.

* IP Multimedia Subsystem will not penetrate corporations until legacy data networking companies such as Cisco and Motorola develop a structured roadmap and offer complete range of products. For example, Cisco will need to rebuild AVVID like framework for IMS.

* SIP may not replace H.323 unless IMS roadmap for corporations is clear.

* With the exception of Alcatel-Lucent, no other companies wish to invest in R&D of both technologies. Moreover, the Telecom service providers have focused on subscribers using mobile handsets or tablets should continue using 3G and wait for commercialization of 4G (LTE).

* The telecom service providers should not position 3G as broadband service on laptops but should rather focus on 3G broadband services on PDAs/mobile handsets with a roadmap to adopt 4G (LTE). Similarly, the WiMAX broadband Internet markets (fixed and mobile) should focus on laptops, desktops and pocket PCs but not on handsets.

* WiMAX has addressed all the gaps left by the WiFi technologies and hence should be considered for wireless IP multimedia corporate applications (like IBM Sametime, Microsoft Communications Server, Go To Meeting (on Citrix), WebEx, etc. in SMEs and corporations.

* There is no technology war among 3G, 4G, WiMAX (fixed & mobile) and 802.11e. All the four technologies have different visions and are expected to settle down in their own respective markets except minor overlaps due to demographic, political, service provider's strategic positioning, etc.

* The services for general subscribers and SMEs/Corporations should be segregated by the service providers by providing (preferably) dedicated channels to SMEs/corporations not mixed with channels serving general subscribers. Also, corporate services are for serious business applications and hence their retention and value per customer would be much higher compared with general customers who would use most of the IP multimedia services for fun.

* 3G with IP multimedia subsystem services (IMS based) is to be positioned for general mobile subscribers, 4G with IP multimedia subsystem services (IMS based) is to be positioned for premium corporate mobile subscribers, fixed WiMAX is to be positioned for rural subscribers for broadband services, and fixed and mobile WiMAX (with segregated channels) is to be positioned for SME/corporate subscribers for broadband services with traditional IP multimedia services (H.323 based).

In addition, WiMAX has a large market for backhaul connectivity and as replacement of OFC last mile in corporate Internet connections. In many cases, it can be included as a backup to corporate leased circuits connecting to Internet.

WiMAX Forum starts validation early for 2.3 GHz mobile certification profile

PORTLAND, USA: The WiMAX Forum announced that validation testing for the 2.3 GHz Mobile WiMAX profile in the 5/10 MHz and 8.75 MHz channels has begun and expects the first group of 2.3 GHz products to be WiMAX Forum Certified in 4Q 2009.

“The acceleration of the certification of 2.3 GHz WiMAX products demonstrates the WiMAX Forum’s unwavering commitment to effective certification programs for the ecosystem,” said Dr. Mohammad Shakouri, acting president of WiMAX Forum.

“The WiMAX Forum’s goal is to create an ecosystem that is supported by interoperable products. Our progress in certification of 2.3GHz also shows the market demand and potential for this spectrum band.”

The 2.3 GHz WiMAX operators are amongst the fastest growing sectors in WiMAX ecosystem. Globally, the WiMAX Forum has tracked 29 commercial deployments in this spectrum band as of June 2009.

“The certification of 2.3 GHz products is critical to the deployment of WiMAX networks in regions such as India, Asia and Africa,” said Ed Agis, co-chair of the WiMAX Forum Certification Working Group.

“Certification profiles for 2.3 GHz also pave the way for WiMAX Forum Certified tri-band devices in 2010 which will increase the opportunities for true global roaming across networks in the 2.3, 2.5 and 3.5 GHz spectrum bands which make up a global WiMAX footprint today.”

Currently, 13 WiMAX Forum member companies have submitted subscriber station and/or base station equipment to be part of the validation testing pool. With such a promising turnout from the vendor community, the WiMAX Forum sees the potential of multiple different form factors in this profile using WiMAX devices to enter the marketplace by early 2010.

Mobile WiMAX operators like Korea Telecom and Packet One are amongst the most active operators engaging with the WiMAX Forum for the 2.3 GHz validation process, providing over-site to the test cases and adding their networking expertise to optimize the tests for their networks.

“We are encouraged by how rapid this validation process has become thanks to best practices and knowledge gained from previous validation and certification processes,” said Agis. “At the start of the certification program, it took about nine months to get the first batch of test cases complete. Now it only takes two to three months to validate the test cases before we start certifying devices.”

Teradyne holds majority share in wireless test market

NORTH READING, USA: According to Gartner, Teradyne Inc. holds a 66.5 percent share of the worldwide ATE RF testing market based on revenue in 2008, up from 60 percent in 2007.

Teradyne’s wireless device test solutions, the Gen4 Microwave and UltraWave 12G, cover the broadest range of today’s complex wireless test requirements with the performance headroom for tomorrow.

“From our perspective, Teradyne continues to maintain clear market leadership in RF ATE,” said Ed Paulsen, wireless segment manager at Teradyne. “The Gen4 Microwave instrument for the FLEX test system continues to see wide acceptance having recently shipped its 500th unit to Sigurd Microelectronics.”

Spanning the broadest range of complex RFIC and RFSOC wireless device applications, the UltraWave 12G and Gen4 test devices including, wireless LAN, Bluetooth, set-top box (STB), 3G and 4G cellular, WiMAX and emerging standards like LTE.

Paulsen continued: "The UltraWave 12G has also quickly ramped and sets the bar in terms of RF performance, throughput, parallel test efficiency and ease of use. 400,000 BWA/WiMAX subscribers added in Q1-09

MONTREAL, CANADA: Approximately 400,000 BWA/WiMAX subscribers and 50 million new active 3G subscribers were added in Q1 2009, according to the latest quarterly report published by Maravedis as part of its leading 4GCounts subscription service.

The average BWA/WiMAX subscriber growth rate was 13% over Q4 2008, and there was a 75 percent year-over-year growth rate since Q1 2008. “Global service revenue growth is tapering off as WiMAX operators experience ARPU stagnation and subscriber growth slow down,” noted Maravedis CEO and Founder, Adlane Fellah.

“2008 was a difficult year for WiMAX and during Q1 2009, the slowdown continued as operators watched their wallets closely in order to survive the downturn,” noted Cintia Garza, co-author of the report.

The quarterly report also explores the motivations for 3G operators to invest in LTE and what challenges they will face when adopting this technology. “Our research reveals that 37 percent of operators consider LTE as their best option available today to address the need for higher bandwidth services and capacity, while 15 percent believe LTE will give them added flexibility to use different spectrum bands,” said report co-author Basharat Ashai.

This quarter's summary findings:
* The top 30 mobile operators committed to LTE accounted in Q1 2009 for 1.1 billion mobile subscribers, of which 447 million correspond to China Mobile. Many of these subscribers are served with GSM, 3G or HSPA technologies and will be migrated to LTE in the future.
* Twenty eight percent of the operators pointed to technological delays as the main challenge for adopting LTE; 24 percent revealed that interoperability between the LTE vendors is a concern; 10% pointed to the lack of spectrum/delayed auctions as a challenge.
* The split by subscriber type among 4GCounts operators was 69 percent residential and 31 percent business.
* Q1 2009 recorded WiMAX ARPU was $42.43 and $116.82 for residential and business segments respectively, compared to $42.33 and $122.64 for the same segments in Q4 2008.
* Out of all CPEs deployed as of Q1 2009, 4GCounts showed 26 percent were 802.16-2004, 20 percent were 802.16e-2005, and 54 percent were vendor proprietary.
* Clearwire USA continues to be the top BWA/WIMAX operator in terms of the number of subscribers. The operator had 500,000 subscribers at the end of Q1 2009, an increase of 5 percent compared with 475,000 reported in Q4 2008.

4G apps set to evolve in mutiplatform environment

MONTREAL, CANADA, Key growth drivers in the 4G applications market include an increasingly open network environment and snackable data plans applicable across various device types, according to Maravedis’ latest research report, “Broadband Services and Applications in the 4G Era: Beyond Existing 3G Applications.”

The evolution from 3G to 4G will be stimulated by services offering enhanced quality, requiring increased bandwidth, elevated sophistication of large-scale information provision, and improved customization capabilities to support user demands.

Further, many 4G applications are set to evolve in a multiplatform environment: “4G applications will be available seamlessly across various wireless technologies (LTE, Wi-Fi, UWB, WiMAX, etc.) and device types (cell phones, laptops, e-readers, PNDs, digital cameras, printers, tablet PCs, etc.) with the same QoS anytime, anywhere,” noted Adlane Fellah, Senior Analyst.

“While it is still unclear which types of mobile applications and services, pricing and business models will be used by carriers on their upcoming 4G networks, we are unlikely to see a revolution in the 4G space. Applications are likely to be extended and improved versions of existing 3G services,” noted Julien Blin, report co-author and Senior Analyst.

“Next generation applications such as wireless VoIP, e-readers apps, mobile IPTV, telematics, M2M apps (e.g. smart grids), and location-aware mobile apps/services embedded with social networking and user-generated content capabilities are likely to become key applications in the upcoming 4G apps space,” added Fellah.

According to the report, the 4G industry is likely to see new killer devices in the line of the iPhone 3G S, Palm Pre, G1/G2 phones, and the Storm, in the 4G space, which will help drive adoption of 4G applications and services.

Mobile app stores are set to become a key distribution channel for upcoming 4G applications. Ultimately, they could end up being a godsend for many carriers at a time when disruptive applications like Skype are threatening carriers’ voice ARPUs. That said, solving cross-mobile app store interoperability issues and content discovery issues will be critical. Adding peer-to-peer recommendations, location awareness, and enhanced mobile search engines to existing mobile app stores should play a key role here.

Several issues will need to be overcome before the future 4G apps market reaches its full potential. These include handset limitation, the poor user experience on many feature phones, the need for sustainable and profitable 4G business and pricing models, mobile discovery issues, privacy and security issues, increased fragmentation, and the lack of standards. Other issues include the low penetration and high cost of data plans and services, and the lack of awareness when it comes to certain mobile data services.

The report analyzes the key operators, future drivers, and key issues/inhibitors in the upcoming 4G apps space. It also assesses the future leading 4G players’ strategies toward 4G applications and services.

Intel Capital invests $43 million in UQ Communications

SANTA CLARA, USA: Intel Capital, Intel Corp.'s global investment organization, has invested $43 million (JP ¥4.15 billion) in Japan-based UQ Communications, a provider of WiMAX mobile services.

UQ Communications will utilize the funding to continue the nationwide expansion of UQ WiMAX service in Japan, with the commitment to provide WiMAX coverage to 90 percent of the country by 2012.

"Intel Capital's investment in UQ Communications is one of our most significant commitments in developing the WiMAX ecosystem around the globe," said Arvind Sodhani, president of Intel Capital and Intel executive vice president. "UQ's WiMAX deployment in Japan is a spectacular example of technology innovation being put to work."

"UQ Communications values Intel Capital's investment to help expand our WiMAX service in Japan," said Takashi Tanaka, CEO of UQ Communications. "We look forward to further collaboration with Intel and Intel Capital."

Intel has played a large role in the proliferation of the WiMAX global standard. To date, nearly 460 WiMAX networks have been deployed in 135 countries.

UQ Communications recently launched trial service of its UQ WiMAX in Tokyo's 23 wards, Yokohama and Kawasaki, and the Haneda Airport (Tokyo International Airport). UQ Communications will formally launch UQ WiMAX service on July 1.

Accumulated 75 million BWA/WiMAX subscribers by 2014: Maravedis

MONTREAL, CANADA: Maravedis, a leading telecom market research and analysis firm has announced the publication of its report “WiMAX and Broadband Wireless Access Equipment Market Analysis, Trends and Forecasts, 2009-2014.” Maravedis forecasts an accumulated 75 million WiMAX subscribers by the end of 2014. “Market forecasts have been revised to reflect the economic slowdown and the progress made by the LTE camp,” said Adlane Fellah, Maravedis CEO and Founder and co-author of the report.

“Facing a strong challenge from LTE, WiMAX is leveraging its existing foothold. Our research shows its healthy ecosystem is key for its survival. More than 22 vendors shipped a total of 2.2 million WiMAX CPEs in 2008,” noted Bilel Bouraoui, Senior Analyst and co-author of the report.

“Similarly, the silicon market faced increasing competition with more than 6 players enjoying market shares of more than 7 percent each. Consolidations, mergers and exists in the device and silicon vendor communities will reduce competition in 2009 if volumes don’t ramp up fast enough,” Bilel added.

The report confirms that both WiMAX and LTE are converging upon 4G service capabilities. LTE’s primary market, 3G operators, will be unlikely to deploy LTE sooner than 2012. “While LTE appears to have the decisive volume advantage, the lag between 3G evolution and the next generation mobile network will greatly benefit WiMAX in the near term,” noted Robert Syputa, Senior Analyst.

Select key findings
* Korean and Taiwanese ODMs accounted for 60 percent of CPEs shipped in 2008.
* The 802.16e-2005 share of new WiMAX subscribers will peak in 2012 and be dominated by mobile devices with embedded wireless modems.
* Alcatel-Lucent, Alvarion, Motorola and Samsung were the leaders in BWA and WiMAX combined equipment markets,
* The WiMAX equipment market, which includes active WiMAX subscribers, will reach an annual $4 billion in 2014, from over $2 billion at the end of 2008.
* Proprietary and fixed WiMAX equipment markets will continue to grow organically to meet the needs of WISPs and vertical segments.
* Service revenues generated by broadband wireless services will reach $15 billion in 2014.

Over half of cellular backhaul capacity will be Ethernet by 2011 end

USA: While microwave will remain the most common last mile link medium, Ethernet is playing an increasing role in supporting backhaul needs for cellular and WiMAX networks.

Over half of cellular backhaul capacity will use Ethernet by the end of 2011, reports In-Stat.

The transition to Ethernet will vary by region, depending on where mobile operators are in their transition to 3G and LTE networks.

Backhaul is getting renewed attention as mobile operators plan for a more data intensive network. The old voice-based solutions can not support the growth in data traffic operators currently face.

Cellular backhaul provides that crucial link between the mobile operator’s radio access network and its core network. Some of the key findings from In-Stat’s new research are:

* 90,000 Gbps of capacity in the last mile of the backhaul network will be needed by the end of 2013 to support the worlds cellular and WiMAX networks.
* In Asia/Pacific, the cellular backhaul last mile backhaul capacity for LTE will be 2,500 Gbps in 2013.
* Scalability is very important for operators when selecting a backhaul solution. Operators want a clear and easy path to increase backhaul capacity.
* For voice over Ethernet, operators are starting to focus on IEEE 1588v2 and Synchronous Ethernet.

WiMAX broadband services to generate $15bn by 2014

HAMPSHIRE, UK: Mobile WiMAX networks are being rolled out more slowly than expected, meaning that service revenues will grow more slowly than forecast a year ago, a new study from Juniper Research concluded.

The report found that revenues from WiMAX 802.16e broadband subscribers will exceed $15 billion globally by 2014. WiMAX will provide an improved experience for broadband customers who are receiving low speed DSL or cable modem services, or at the limit of DSL coverage.

However, WiMAX is faced by spectrum auction postponements in several countries, funding problems from the credit crunch, and slow network implementations, all combining to handicap network operators signing up subscribers.

WiMAX hampered by significant hurdles
These factors -– some of which are outside the control of the WiMAX ecosystem -- are holding back the market.

Report author Howard Wilcox warned: "Whilst market leaders such as Clearwire are launching services and expanding internationally, there are also well-publicised challenges for WiMAX such as those highlighted by French regulator ARCEP. We’re on the cusp of make or break time for WiMAX."

In addition, the report determined that the WiMAX ecosystem needs to deliver by translating trials into reliable, commercial services that attract customers.
Further findings include:

• North America, Far East and China, and Western Europe together will account for 70 percent of market by 2014.
• Mobile WiMAX has role to play in providing broadband in developing countries where there is no wired network.
• Africa and the Middle East, South America, the Indian subcontinent and Eastern Europe will together be worth some $4bn by 2014.

Acer joins WiMAX Open Patent Alliance

USA: Acer becomes the first global PC OEM board member of the WiMAX Open Patent Alliance (OPA) -- a group dedicated to offering intellectual property rights (IPR) solutions that support the development and widespread adoption of WiMAX.

As the first global PC OEM board member, Acer will help the proliferation of WiMAX technology, devices and applications around the world.

The OPA was formed in June 2008 by members of the WiMAX ecosystem. Acer joins current OPA members Alcatel-Lucent, Alvarion, Cisco, Clearwire, Huawei Technologies, Intel, and Samsung Electronics to foster an ecosystem focused on broader choice and competitive equipment and service costs for WiMAX technology, devices and applications globally.

"We are proud to welcome Acer to the OPA. Adding their voice further strengthens the support for an innovative and open WiMAX ecosystem," said OPA President Yung Hahn. "Taking a collaborative approach to IPR issues, the OPA can continue to foster greater WiMAX innovation, collaboration and competition. The OPA is excited to expand the reach of the 4G WiMAX ecosystem to include non-traditional companies like Acer -- a leading innovator on the cusp of the computing/cellular convergence revolution."

Acer is ranked as the worlds No. 3 vendor for total PCs and No. 2 for notebooks, with the fastest growth among the top-five players. Acer currently offers several embedded-WiMAX notebooks and netbooks from the Acer Aspire and Acer Travelmate lines around the world.

The Acer announcement is significant since it reflects the first major PC OEM to take an active leadership role and support of the development of WiMAX technology in its products. In the past few years, Acer has been seemingly unstoppable as it continues to take market share and quickly closes in on global No. 2 vendor Dell, which last week announced the support for WiMAX in 2 of its upcoming notebooks. To survive, other PC OEMS must continue to innovate with technologies such as WiMAX and enter into new markets and product categories.
