MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA: Increasing demand for cloud-based services is driving a boom in the wholesale telecoms market, according to Ovum.
In a new report*, the independent telecoms analyst claims that wholesale telecoms providers are set to benefit from growing consumer and business demand for cloud-based services, provided by a new breed of enterprise.
Paris Burstyn, report author and Ovum analyst, said: “A growing number of companies that serve businesses and consumers feed the demand for the cloud. They purchase telecoms services on the scale of small-to-medium carriers from wholesale telecoms carriers.
“This means wholesalers are poised to experience a boom because as these intermediary companies experience increasing demand for their products and services, wholesale telecoms suppliers have the opportunity to grow with them.
“There are also new intermediary companies constantly emerging. As businesses and consumers demand a wider range of cloud services and become more reliant on them, new companies emerge to meet their needs. Together this means that wholesale telecoms revenues will experience growth over the next few years.
“But wholesale telecoms service providers must take advantage of this growth and invest in human and technological resources to capture the new business.”

Global optical communication market continues recovery
EUGENE, USA: Despite continuing declines in Capex and modest growth in sales of telecom networking equipment, the industry momentum is clearly positive in 2010.
Sales of datacom systems picked up promptly in 2010, as businesses restarted upgrade projects delayed by the economic downturn. Very strong demand for optical components and modules is an early indication of the industry-wide recovery. LightCounting projections for the market growth in 2011-2014 are detailed in the forecast report and database, which are available now.
Global sales of transceivers will reach $2.4 billion in 2010, increasing by 16 percent. Sales of Ethernet and Fiber Channel modules will increase by 17 percent and 25 percent, respectively, driven by sales of 8G and 10G SFP+ transceivers. DWDM transceiver sales, lead by 10 Gbps XFP modules, will be up 22 percent for the year.
Sales of passive optical components, ROADMs, pump lasers and amplifiers are growing well ahead of the total market for components and modules in 2010. This suggests that a new cycle in infrastructure upgrades may be starting now, since these devices are typically used in early stages of network installations.
"Concerned about the future impact of a hobbled infrastructure, governments in the United States, China, India, and elsewhere are investing in economic stimulus programs to support the growth and expansion of their national communications infrastructure and jumpstarting a new investment cycle," commented David Krozier, senior analyst at LightCounting.
"We also see increasing use of optical connectivity in wireless infrastructure to support the exploding bandwidth needs of new 3G and LTE networks."

Infonetics names JDSU as ROADM market leader
MILPITAS, USA: JDSU announced that Infonetics Research, a telecom market research firm, identified JDSU as the leading provider of Reconfigurable Optical Add/Drop Multiplexer (ROADM) products for the first half of calendar year 2010 in its "2010 Biannual ROADM Components" report.
Findings indicate that JDSU captured 38 percent of total ROADM revenue and 39 percent of all ROADM units shipped during this time.
"JDSU has been providing leading ROADM technology and integration capabilities to the optical market since the beginning, even back in the days when liquid crystal wavelength blockers were first introduced," said Brandon Collings, CTO of Optical Communications at JDSU.

Business VoIP service revenue up 8 percent in 1H10
CAMPBELL, USA: Infonetics Research has released its updated 2010 VoIP and Unified Communication Services and Subscribers market share and forecast report, which now includes an IP Centrex/UC Provider Tracker highlighting deployments by provider, region, service, and platform.

Philippines' mobile market to enter mature growth stage
MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA: In its latest reports*, independent telecoms analyst firm Ovum discusses the changing dynamics of the Philippines mobile market and the resultant change in the strategies of two largest players - PLDT and Globe.
Our analysis of PLDT and Globe highlights that the overall revenue growth in the Philippines' mobile market is slowing down, leading to margin challenges for most operators.
Both PLDT and Globe's revenues shrank 1% year-on-year in Q2 2010 (as opposed to 3 percent and 1 percent growth, respectively in Q2 2009), while their EBITDA margins declined 1 percent and 11 percent, respectively.
Ovum anticipates this to be the first signs of impending market maturity caused by an ever increasing mobile penetration rate in the country. Ovum forecasts that the mobile penetration rate will increase from 78 percent at the end of 2009 to 98 percent by 2015, reaching a total mobile subscriber base of 107 million users.
“Our research in other markets suggests that focus on driving data services is typically the way to offset revenue decline,” said Anubhuti Belgaonkar, lead analyst. “PLDT and Globe have now shifted focus to mobile broadband to drive revenue growth, a strategy Ovum closely agrees with.” Given the low broadband penetration and the limited coverage of fixed broadband networks, mobile broadband appears to have immense growth potential in the Philippines.
To capitalize on this opportunity, PLDT and Globe are focusing on reducing ownership and usage costs to encourage uptake of mobile broadband. As a result, PLDT’s mobile broadband subscriber base has jumped 90 percent year-on-year to reach 1.4 million in June 2010, while Globe’s subscribers have increased almost two-fold to reach 596,000.
“Going forward, affordability along with adequate network coverage and capacity will be crucial for driving the uptake of broadband services in the Philippines. However, operators would have to be mindful of the associated costs to ensure that their bottom lines are not squeezed”, concludes Belgaonkar.
