GTCR and Rural Broadband Investments acquire Cable Management Associates
USA: GTCR, a leading private equity firm, announced it has simultaneously signed and closed the acquisition of Cable Management Associates, a subsidiary of privately held Etan Industries.
The acquisition was completed through GTCR’s previously established partnership with Rural Broadband Investments, and comes only one month after RBI’s initial platform investment in NewWave Communications. With extensive cable experience, RBI intends to invest in CMA in order to provide CMA’s customers with state of the art high-speed internet, video and voice services.
GTCR and Phil Spencer formed RBI in late 2012 for the purpose of acquiring broadband infrastructure assets in small and mid-sized communities. CMA passes approximately 120,000 homes in rural Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi and Nevada.
This is the second acquisition by RBI, which plans to build a platform of 300,000-400,000 cable subscribers in small-to-mid sized rural markets to deliver a breadth of new services to residential and commercial customers. RBI now serves over 120,000 customers and passes approximately 370,000 homes in Illinois, Indiana, Missouri, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Texas and Nevada.

Cavendish Kinetics announces breakthrough RF MEMS technology
IMS 2013, USA: Cavendish Kinetics, a leading provider of RF MEMS solutions for dramatically improving connectivity between wireless devices and cell towers, announced the availability of production samples of its tunable RF capacitors to key strategic partners.
Use of Cavendish Digital Variable Capacitor (DVC) technology in wireless devices enhances the user experience, differentiates phones and lowers costs for handset makers. It also improves spectral efficiency, coverage and customer retention for network operators. Potential customers include handset OEMs and ODMs and device module manufacturers.
Shipped as a chip scale package (CSP), the DVC is used to tune antennas, power amplifiers and filters to significantly improve RF connection quality and signal strength. RF tuning is widely viewed as a leading technology solution for today’s challenging LTE, LTE-A and 4G wireless standards. The Cavendish technology meets today’s stringent technical requirements while also fitting slim form factors; it is highly reliable, simple to implement and cost effective.
Cavendish high-performance, breakthrough DVC products for manufacturers of smartphones and other wireless devices will help resolve the industry’s toughest connectivity challenges. Use of internal antennas and demand for larger displays, as well as proliferating features and frequency bands, have contributed to a widening gap between actual and theoretical data rates for wireless devices.
Radio performance is reduced significantly in many cases, creating challenges for device designers and network operators and frustration for consumers. As usage of bandwidth-intensive video and interactive gaming continues to increase, the performance gap is becoming not just a technical issue, but an economic one for wireless operators.

Mellanox announces virtual modular switch
USA & ISRAEL: Mellanox Technologies Ltd has announced the availability of the Mellanox Virtual Modular Switch (VMS) solution, a world leading Ethernet data center aggregation switch infrastructure.
Mellanox VMS is a high-port density, flexible and scalable data center aggregation switching solution. Mellanox VMS provides up to 720 ports of 40 gigabits per second with latency lower than 2 microseconds while reducing capital expenses by up to 85 percent and power consumption by up to 90 percent.
Moreover, Mellanox VMS offers the best-in-class resiliency, maintaining up to over 90 percent of the aggregation bandwidth at the time of a switch failure, compared to traditional chassis-based switches.
According to Crehan Research’s Data Center Ethernet Switch reports, there has been a significant mix shift away from modular or chassis-based switches toward fixed switches, with fixed switches gaining over twenty points of share since 2008.
The Mellanox VMS solution is constructed by connecting Mellanox’s SwitchX-2 based 40 and 56 Gigabit Ethernet systems connected in a non-blocking topology and managed with the widely-used Puppet and Chef management applications.
