SingTel extends global network to connect to Cologix’s 511 11th Avenue data center

USA & SINGAPORE: Cologix, a network neutral interconnection  and colocation  company, announced that Singapore Telecommunications Ltd (SingTel), Asia’s leading communications group, has selected Cologix's Minneapolis data center to deploy a point-of-presence (PoP) supporting their ConnectPlus Internet Protocol Virtual Private Network (IP VPN) services.

Through this deployment, network partners and customers can access SingTel's connectivity solutions via Cologix’s Meet-Me-Room in the 511 Building in downtown Minneapolis.

First 100G network covering Europe and North America launched by TeliaSonera

USA: Following an upgrade of its pan-European network, TeliaSonera International Carrier (TSIC) has become the first global carrier with 100G (100 gigabits per second) networks spanning Europe and North America.

The North American network was upgraded to 100G in November 2012 and connects 23 cities as far west as Los Angeles. This is now complemented by a pan-European 100G network stretching from Madrid to Moscow.

"We own and operate our own global fiber backbone. This lets us deploy the technology required to build a future-enabled network. For our wholesale customers, 100G means the ability to scale up capacity without scaling up complexity - and doing so cost-efficiently", says Erik Hallberg, president of TeliaSonera International Carrier.

Using 100G in both North America and Europe, TSIC is also looking at options to upgrade its trans-Atlantic connection to 100G. This will create a seamless 100G enabled network encompassing Europe and North America.

The European 100G network upgrade is based on NSN’s hiT 7300 platform. In the US Infinera’s DTNX platform is used. This dual-vendor stance is part of maintaining the independence of TeliaSonera’s network and its ability to adapt to ever-changing and ever-increasing market demands.

It is another first for TSIC, who was also the first to sell wholesale wavelengths, the first to offer high-end bandwidth on demand and the first to break the terabit barrier.

ZTE joins Power Matters Alliance

Mobile World Congress 2013, CHINA: ZTE has joined Power Matters Alliance (PMA). The news originally broke at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) exhibition.

With the evolution of consumer electronics, the average number of products consumers use is growing. Despite improving the efficiency and level of access these devices provide, consumers remain tethered to a range of charging devices and power cords.

PMA is a wireless charging standards organization that has emerged to establish guidelines and standardize an infrastructure for the future of wireless power. PMA is committed to creating wireless power supply standards for handsets and electronic equipment that conform to IEEE standards, and it is bringing together large organizations, such as AT&T, Google, and Starbucks, to help achieve these goals.

The need for a standardized wireless charging infrastructure stems from the current environment where terminal units differ in power parameter requirements and wireless charging is confined to only a few handsets and certain geographical regions. As the world's fourth-largest handset manufacturer,

ZTE supplies over 10 million units annually, and is uniquely positioned to contribute to the development of wireless charging solutions. By joining PMA, ZTE offers a strong boost to the commercial popularization of wireless charging technology and the unification of international wireless charging standards.

MoSys announces 100G multi-mode gearbox PHY for networking and communications line cards and modules

OFC/NFOEC 2013, USA: MoSys has announced its new LineSpeed 100G Multi-Mode Gearbox integrated circuit (IC) for next-generation networking and communications systems.

The high-performance gearbox serializer/deserializer (SerDes) utilizes advanced equalizer technology to deliver industry-leading performance. Exploding demand for aggregate bandwidth makes it essential to increase port density of 10G, 40G, and 100G line cards for next-generation systems. MoSys’ LineSpeed device enables high-density, low-power line cards and modules for short and extended reach data path applications.

The LineSpeed MSH310 device converts 10 lanes of serial 10/11 Gbps data into 4 lanes of serial 25/28 Gbps data or 10 lanes of 10/11 Gbps data per IEEE 802.3ba, and integrates a complete CAUI and OIF-CEI-3.0 transceiver along with a 10:4 or 10:10 multiplexer and 4:10 de-multiplexer. It supports IEEE802.3ba 100G Ethernet plus OIF-CEI-3.0 10G and 25/28G specifications.

Global LTE traffic will grow by over 200 percent in 2013

SINGAPORE: The total mobile data traffic had amounted to 13,412 petabytes by the end of 2012; an increase of 69 percent year-on-year.

The 3G data usage occupied 46 percent of the total with an increase of 130 percent year-on-year. 4G LTE traffic is accelerating, with a growth rate of 207 percent in 2013 compared to 99 percent for 3G traffic. “In developed markets, 4G is rapidly gaining traction. Verizon Wireless, for example, has reported that 50 percent of its data usage is on 4G LTE,” commented Marina Lu, research associate at ABI Research.

Underpinning mobile data usage are smartphone apps; their downloads, and the traffic usage they generate, has become a significant contributor to mobile data traffic. Smartphone app downloads were 36.2 billion for 2012, up 88 percent compared to 2011.

Asia-Pacific has overtaken North America (25 percent), with 39 percent of total smartphone app downloads. IP/web browsing constitutes 51 percent of total mobile data traffic in 2012. However, by 2018, large mobile device screens and 4G data-speeds will stimulate mobile video streaming/downloads to account for 56 percent of total traffic.

Smartphone apps are a double-edged sword. While they promote the adoption of mobile data tariffs, Over-The-Top Instant Messaging and VoIP services are threatening the operators’ messaging and voice revenue models. However, operators are striving to benefit from the data usage and not just get burdened with data traffic.

“The emergent growth in enterprise apps does have potential. Both ATT and Orange have invested in enterprise apps, setting up their own in-house service teams,” added Jake Saunders, VP for forecasting. “Orange is offering Health Trusts mobile-centric ID authentication that allows them to offer confidential and secure mobile medical services that can enhance aftercare support and increase efficiency.”

OMA demos next generation of mobile technologies

UK: The Open Mobile Alliance (OMA) demonstration day took the mobile industry into a new era of wireless concepts at Mobile World Congress this year, as industry leading vendors and operators came together to demonstrate next generation mobile technologies.

Presentations and demonstrations were made from OMA members companies and global industry leaders including: Huawei, Telecom Italia, Interop Technologies, Comverse, CSR, Sensinode, Fraunhofer Institute for Open Communication Systems (FOKUS), Gemalto, Red Bend Software and Invisitrack. Demos ranged from M2M, Rich Communications Services (RCS), Enterprise Cloud Solutions, Federated Social Networks, Augmented Reality and Location-based Services (LBS).

Seth Newberry, GM of the OMA said: “We had a great event, we filled the room and really held the attention of the audience.  The presentations were terrific; there were some announcements about products that were based on OMA enablers and some compelling technology demonstrations. All of our members who attended were showing some really fascinating stuff.

“I work with OMA specifications all the time, and tend to see these enablers as independent pieces of technology. But when the enablers are embedded in these real-world applications, they really come to life and people get to see what the work our members do actually produces for the industry and the consumers.”

This year’s event witnessed applications from nearly 2500 attendee’s and following its huge success, the OMA can confirm it will be back again next year, no doubt with even more exciting new technologies to show.

SPIRIT DSP on AT&T's planned buyout of Reliance Jio

RUSSIA: SPIRIT DSP, the world's #1 voice and video over IP engines provider serving more than 1 billion users in 100+ countries, commented on AT&T's recent announcement to buyout a 25 percent stake in Indian telecom service provider Reliance Jio for $3.5 billion.

Currently, Reliance Jio is the only owner of pan-India BWA spectrum through winning License for Broadband Wireless Access (BWA) Spectrum in 22 circles across India, auctioned by the government in 2010. Reliance plans to invest around Rupees 500 billion in LTE deployments.

Andrew Sviridenko, SPIRIT’s chairman, said: "This acquisition move marks a significant milestone in the Indian telecom sector, and reflects on the movement by the largest telecom service providers to see greenfield opportunities in parts of Asia ― regions that have been slow to deploy LTE. AT&T's planned investment into Reliance Jio, given its huge spectrum acquisition, is an obvious indication of AT&T's interest in propelling the currently lagging LTE market in India. This acquisition underscores the great opportunity for the largest service providers to look beyond their boarders to capitalized on entering new growing markets for LTE expansion."

Reliance Jio recently partnered with SPIRIT DSP to offer voice and video calls over its LTE network across the country. AT&T also licensed SPIRIT DSP's voice engine, which works at the heart of AT&T's popular Connect web conferencing service.
