“Continuing demand for downstream capacity contributed to strong growth in downstream CMTS port shipments in North America. We estimate that for the first time ever, more than half of ports shipped were downstream ports,” said Ovum Analyst Kamalini Ganguly. “Arris topped the CMTS market in volume for the first time.

2Q09 highlights
* DSLAM shipments’ increase versus 1Q09 = 10 percent
* DSLAM shipments’ decline versus 2Q08 = 19 percent
* CMTS shipments’ decline versus 1Q09 = 6 percent
* CMTS shipments’ decline versus 2Q08 = 39 percent

Alcatel-Lucent, which shipped 5.8 million DSL ports in 2Q09, remained in first place in the DSL market on a rolling 4Q volume basis with 32 percent share, followed by Huawei (28 percent), ZTE (16 percent), Nokia Siemens Networks (5 percent), Ericsson (5 percent), and UTStarcom (3 percent).

All the regions saw double-digit sequential growth in DSL shipments, with the exception of South and Central America. In the CMTS market, Cisco dropped to 50 percent rolling 4Q market share in terms of ports shipped, followed by Arris whose share jumped to 35 percent and Motorola whose share grew to 13 percent. Downstream ports contributed to more than 50 percent of CMTS ports shipped for the first time.

Nokia Siemens Networks, Juniper to integrate IP and optical technologies

BANGALORE, INDIA: Nokia Siemens Networks and Juniper Networks Inc. are combining their respective strengths in Optical and IP networking to create a solution that brings the two complementary technologies closer together.

The integrated IP-Optical solution will provide operators with a highly flexible, reliable and cost efficient way to scale their networks to manage growing volumes of data, voice and multimedia applications. The scope of cooperation includes the development of cost-optimized 10G, 40G and 100G IP over DWDM solutions with management integration and GMPLS control plane interworking.

“Juniper brings world-class IP routing expertise while Nokia Siemens Networks brings forth world-class Wavelength Division Multiplexing transport technology including operational management systems for both technologies. To have both worlds under one network management roof means the highest possible quality in terms of simplicity and efficiency,” said Uwe Fischer, Head of DWDM Business Line at Nokia Siemens Networks.

“As carriers consolidate their IP and DWDM environments to ensure cost efficient growth, our solution will form the bedrock of the vision that breaks the barriers between optical and electrical layers.”

”As trends such as video, virtualization and cloud computing continue to drive the need for core networking capacity, operators will be looking for ways to scale their networks efficiently and cost-effectively,” said Opher Kahane, senior vice president and general manager, High-End Systems Business Unit, Juniper Networks.

“The combination of IP and optical transport technologies increase the efficiency of the network, and we are very excited to be working with Nokia Siemens Networks to bring this innovative solution to market.”

The implementation of long-haul DWDM optics on router line interface cards will increase network efficiency by reducing the need for redundant transponders, but can present network management challenges because IP and optical networks are traditionally managed separately. To address these concerns, Nokia Siemens Networks and Juniper are creating an innovative solution which manages the entire router–to-optical link as a single entity.

Using Juniper’s T Series Core Routers, the router-integrated optical DWDM interfaces will interoperate seamlessly with Nokia Siemens Networks’ hiT7300 WDM platform and be managed by the company’s carrier grade Transport Network Management System (TNMS).

Complemented by Nokia Siemens Networks’ unique network planning software, TransNet, the joint solution will improve overall efficiency in the network. In addition, the operator will be able to enjoy faster service provisioning times as only one DWDM interface will need to be installed and configured, not to mention improved reliability through early link failure detection, enhanced troubleshooting and overall simplicity.

Nokia Siemens Networks to purchase Nortel's LTE and CDMA assets

ESPOO, FINLAND: Nokia Siemens Networks has taken a significant step toward strengthening its leadership in LTE next generation wireless technology and expanding its market presence in North America with an agreement to acquire key assets from Nortel.

The planned $650 million acquisition, which will bring together the highly complementary assets of the two companies in the field of mobile radio access, adds further key talent and resources to enhance Nokia Siemens Networks' existing strength and momentum in LTE.

The acquisition of Nortel's profitable CDMA business would significantly improve Nokia Siemens Networks' presence in North America and make it a leading supplier of wireless infrastructure products in the region.

"This agreement provides an important strategic opportunity for Nokia Siemens Networks to strengthen its position in two key areas, North America and LTE, at a price that makes good economic sense," said Simon Beresford-Wylie, CEO of Nokia Siemens Networks. "It also represents stability for Nortel's existing customers and offers a great opportunity for employees to move into a stable future with an industry winner. The R&D organization in Canada would become a long-term wireless center of excellence within Nokia Siemens Networks, complementing our other global sites."

Existing Nortel and Nokia Siemens Networks customers welcomed the agreement. "Verizon views today's announcement as good news for the global wireless industry," said Dick Lynch, Executive Vice President and Chief Technology Officer of Verizon. "This deal brings together two important Verizon suppliers; we look forward to our continuing work with Nokia Siemens Networks."

"As Nortel's largest customer in Canada, Bell supports Nokia Siemens' plan to continue to foster Nortel's long history of research and development in Canada. Such ongoing technology development is of critical importance as Bell rapidly builds out our advanced next generation wireless networks across Canada," said Stephen Howe, Senior Vice President of Wireless Networks and Chief Technology Officer, Bell Mobility.

"This news eliminates industry uncertainty and enhances CDMA and EVDO, today and in the future. We at Sprint are pleased to have the support of a strong and stable supplier to continue to deliver reliable technology and services that our customers rely on every day," said Dan Hesse, President and Chief Executive Officer, Sprint Nextel.

"Bringing these assets of Nortel together with Nokia Siemens Networks is good for customers like TELUS and good for Canada," said Eros Spadotto, Executive Vice-President, Technology Strategy of TELUS. "As TELUS invests in building a next generation wireless network, we are pleased by Nokia Siemens Networks' strong desire to maintain a strong R&D presence in Canada, helping keep the country at the forefront of advanced wireless technology."

The transaction would see more than 2,500 Nortel employees -- largely located in Ottawa, Canada and Dallas, United States but also including employees in Mexico and China -- transferred to Nokia Siemens Networks.

Approximately 400 of those employees are focused on LTE research and development, and would enhance the ability of Nokia Siemens Networks to provide innovation and strengthen its position in LTE, where it is already working with customers such as NTT Docomo in Japan. The support and development of Nokia Siemens Networks' existing product lines would be unaffected by this acquisition.

Export Development Canada (EDC), Canada's government-owned export credit agency, is supporting this transaction with a USD 300 million loan commitment. "We are delighted to have secured the backing of EDC for this transaction," said Luca Maestri, Chief Financial Officer of Nokia Siemens Networks. "Nokia Siemens Networks is committed to Canada as an important center of excellence for next-generation wireless technology."

Due to Nortel's restructuring process, the transaction is subject to the approval of the United States Bankruptcy Court and the Ontario Superior Court of Justice. Hearings by those courts to approve bidding procedures, break-up fee and expense reimbursement will be held on or before June 29, 2009, with final sale hearings expected on July 28, 2009 in the US and July 30, 2009 in Canada.

Closing of the transaction, which is expected to occur in the third quarter of 2009, remains subject to customary closing conditions, including receipt of necessary regulatory approvals.

Nokia Siemens Networks helps IDEA create new revenue streams

BANGALORE, INDIA: Indian mobile operator IDEA Cellular is upgrading its network in 22 telecom service areas to tap into the lucrative value added data services market. By March 2010, IDEA subscribers will be able to enjoy multimedia messaging, email, web browsing, online music and other innovative mobile services.

The services will be enabled by Nokia Siemens Networks’ GPRS (general packet radio service) technology and Unified Charging Solution (UCS evolve).

Nokia Siemens Networks will add GPRS capability to 10 IDEA telecom service areas, while the existing GPRS capability in 12 other areas will be expanded.

“The value added services market in India holds tremendous potential. The greater opportunity lies in data services, and in expanding our capabilities and service portfolio in this area. The right technology foundation is fundamental to our success, and it needs to include not just a method of delivering services, but of monetizing them effectively. Nokia Siemens Networks has strong credentials in this field and has played an important role in the development of our technology strategy for data services,” said Anil Tandan, CTO, IDEA Cellular.

As part of the project, Nokia Siemens Networks has also designed and will implement a charging solution that will enable IDEA Cellular to use a single system across these locations for real time charging of the new services for both prepaid and postpaid subscribers.

Michael Kuehner, Country Head, Nokia Siemens Networks, said: “Customer lifecycle management entails building a flexible ecosystem of multiple partners that can develop innovative applications and content quickly, and at the right price points. The volumes and complexity are high, which makes billing and charging of these services difficult. As its technology partner, we are confident that our solution will not only help IDEA Cellular build new revenue streams but also deliver greater quality of service.”

The IDEA service areas where Nokia Siemens Networks will add GPRS capability are Mumbai, Orissa, Tamil Nadu, including Chennai, Kolkata and West Bengal, Jammu and Kashmir, Karnataka, Punjab, Assam and North East.

Nokia Siemens Networks will upgrade IDEA’s existing GPRS capacity in the service areas of Delhi, Andhra Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh East, Uttar Pradesh West, Haryana, Kerala, Bihar, Maharashtra and Goa, Madhya Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Rajasthan and Gujarat.
