“Our customers are asking for location technology that can address the emerging needs of location-enabled applications, and indoor location and navigation are key to that,” said Ahmet Alpdemir, senior VP of the Mobile Business Area at CSR. “The SiRFstarV and SiRFusion platforms will enable our customers to differentiate their devices by delivering an enhanced experience to consumers and enterprises using location-enabled services.”
Thirty years ago, using satellite positioning technology required several minutes or more to provide a single outdoor position fix, which could vary by as much as a mile even when standing still. Today, highly accurate outdoor navigation with continuous updates once per second is commonplace. Similarly, until now, using Wi-Fi technology required several seconds to provide a single indoor position fix, which also had relatively low accuracy and a high degree of variability (jitter).
By combining real-time Wi-Fi and satellite positioning information, pedestrian dead reckoning (using MEMS sensors) and crowd sourced location and aiding data from a cloud-based server, SiRFusion technology is able to achieve the rapid and more accurate indoor position fixes needed to make continuous indoor navigation a part of everyday life.
“Unlike many other systems that require manual surveys to build and maintain an indoor Wi-Fi and cellular location database, the CSR Positioning Centre (CPC) cloud-based server is able to receive anonymous and voluntary location information wirelessly from users’ devices, even indoors, to improve the database,” said Dave Huntingford, director of Product Management for Mobile Business Area at CSR. “We have taken a fundamentally new approach to location and navigation that achieves a seamless transition between outdoor and indoor navigation by combining real-time and cloud-based location information from a multitude of sources and processing it right on the mobile device.”
The upcoming CSR SiRFstarV family of location chips, due out next year, will be the first CSR products to implement and utilise the SiRFusion platform.

Interop hosted CMAS solution recieves FEMA certification
FORT MYERS, USA: Interop Technologies, a provider of core wireless solutions for messaging, mobile device management, and connectivity gateways, announced that its Hosted Commercial Mobile Alert System (CMAS) solution has been certified by the Federal Emergency Management Administration (FEMA) and the Department of Homeland Security. This certification follows the successful completion of testing on behalf of Bluegrass Cellular, a leading regional wireless operator in Central Kentucky.
The Commercial Mobile Service Provider (CMSP) Gateway Host Certification designates that Interop’s CMSP Gateway successfully delivers public safety and weather alert messages received from the Federal Alert Gateway to an operator’s network in compliance with the Joint ATIS/TIA J-STD-102. This blanket certification eliminates the need for other network operators selecting Interop’s CMAS solution—whether they have a CDMA, GSM, UMTS, or LTE network—to spend time and resources conducting testing with FEMA.
Completing the testing process well ahead of the April 7, 2012 CMAS implementation deadline ensures that Interop can forward alerts to network operators choosing Interop’s CMSP Gateway as soon as the alerts become available. Interop’s hosted CMSP Gateway provides operators with affordable compliance by significantly reducing the investment and staff resources needed to deploy an on-network CMAS system.
The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and FEMA are implementing CMAS as a result of the Warning, Alert, and Response Network (WARN) Act, a federal law enacted in 2006. Presidential, Imminent Threat, and AMBER alerts will be delivered over participating operators’ cellular broadcast networks directly to subscribers with CMAS-compatible handsets, helping to decrease response times and save lives and property when emergencies occur.
“Interop demonstrated significant leadership and CMAS expertise throughout the FEMA testing process, completing testing in only four hours” said Scott McCloud, VP–Wireless Networks, Bluegrass Cellular. “We are very pleased with how quickly and easily Interop obtained certification and are happy to be working with the industry leader to provide these critical alerts to our subscribers.”
“The successful completion of FEMA testing reinforces Interop’s ability to fully comply with this government initiative” said Damian Sazama, VP, Corporate and Product Marketing, Interop Technologies. “We are glad to support Bluegrass in delivering these important alerts to subscribers throughout Central Kentucky.”
