Nokia announces Ovi Music Store download trends for 2010

NEW DELHI, INDIA: Celebrating a successful spell with Ovi Music Store this year, Nokia shared interesting trends on legal digital music consumption in India. These trends have been observed across several music categories on its Ovi Music services since the time of its launch last year. Oscar winner AR Rahaman has consistently been the most downloaded Indian artist on Ovi Music Store in India.

Shakira, with her official World Cup song Waka Waka, was the most downloaded international artist for the year not only in India but for Ovi Music Store globally. However, India was the top downloading country for Shakira, accounting for 25 percent of all global downloads.

Bollywood music, particularly romantic songs, is among the most popular form of music in India and our findings further strengthens this fact. Bollywood as a genre registered the highest number of downloads followed by ‘pop’ and ‘rock’ music respectively.

Jasmeet Gandhi, head services marketing, Nokia India said: “Music is an intrinsic part of the Indian society and we offer music for every age, gender, mood and situation. Launched with the intent to change the consumption pattern for legal digital music in India, Ovi Music Store has reinvented the way consumer experiences music and received an overwhelming response in India.

"We are proud to announce the legal digital music consumption trends on the store for 2010 and earnestly hope the trend of legal digital downloads will continue to grow, giving the music industry the much needed boost.”

Two popular songs of the recently released movie ‘Dabaang’ - “Tere mast mast do nain” and “Munni badnam hui” are among top five downloaded songs. While the most downloaded playback singers were Rahet Fateh Ali Khan and Mamta Sharma. Amongst the music directors, Pritam scored the highest on popularity charts. Sajid-Wajid, Vishal-Shekhar and Salim-Sulaiman were other most downloaded music directors.

International popular music is a hot favourite among Indian listeners and Shakira topped the female barrage of artists followed by Taylor Swift and Norah Jones. Among the popular albums of 2010, Enrique’s album "I like it" outperformed his contemporaries. Michael Jackson’s "Hold my hand "and Justin Bieber’s “Baby" found place in the second and third spot.

Ovi Music Store has played a major role in transforming the trend of legal digital music downloads in India, encouraging consumers to download music from a single platform. Ovi music store is a unique platform which enables consumers to explore and choose from close to 5 million legal songs in its catalog.
