Intrinsyc Destinator 9 sets new standard for navigation experience

Sidebar – Destinator 9 incorporates a new visual navigation aid while in landscape mode. At the user’s option, the SideBar is displayed side-by-side with the map to provide upcoming maneuvers, speed, trip time, and distance.
Gesture Recognition – With Destinator 9, users can swipe, pan, and kinetically scroll through maps with the flick of a finger.
New Map Views – Realistic horizon, sky, and road signs, map rendering with anti-aliasing technology and optional satellite views provide for a more visually satisfying experience.
Dial a POI – Calling any Point of Interest (POI) or businesses directly from the screen is easier than ever before. Clicking a POI in navigation mode brings up its address and phone number (if available) and a single tap on the number initiates the call.
Local Search – Destinator 9 leverages the most popular online search engines to support local searches and display the corresponding results on the map. A single additional tap brings up directions.
StickyPOI – Clicking the new StickyPOI icon on the NavStrip opens a menu of popular categories. Tapping on a category, such as hotels or restaurants, automatically displays the nearby POIs on the map. One more click brings up directions.
Tap N Go – Navigate to any map location with just two taps of the finger from Destinator 9’s proprietary Tap N Go popup menu.
Save N Send – Quickly save and retrieve locations on the map and share them with friends and colleagues via text messaging services.
OTA - Over-the-air updates make it easier for carriers to roll out additional features and location-based services (LBS) such as real-time traffic, travel guides, cheapest gas, and parking space availability.
Try & Buy – Support for “try & buy” allows consumers to purchase the Destinator 9 software after a trial period of use.

Opera retakes leadership from iPhone in mobile browser market

DUBLIN, IRELAND: Opera is the world's number one mobile browser, overtaking iPhone in May according to data from StatCounter Global Stats. In May Opera took 24.6 percent of the worldwide market compared to 22.3 percent for iPhone. Nokia retains third place with 17.9 percent. However, if one includes iPod Touch then Apple browsers still lead with iPod Touch alone taking 14.9 percent of the market in May.

StatCounter, which provides free website traffic analysis, is one of the largest web analytics companies in the world recording in excess of ten billion pageloads per month. In March it launched StatCounter Global Stats, a free online service which captures market share of search engines, browsers and operating systems including mobile.

"Opera began the year in number one slot but iPhone overtook it in February. May saw Opera regain the number one position," commented Aodhan Cullen, CEO and founder of StatCounter. "It will be fascinating to watch how this battle plays out over the year."

He drew attention to the performance of BlackBerry which is in fourth place with 6.9% of the global market. "An interesting finding is that BlackBerry has steadily increased market share from 4.9 percent in January to 6.9 percent in May. Despite the global recession it looks as if executives are holding on to their BlackBerries," commented Cullen.

GyPSii launches Java version into China

SALO, FINLAND & AMSTERDAM, THE NETHERLANDS: GeoSentric Oyj’s GyPSii business unit, developers of the award-winning GyPSii mobile social networking application, have launched the Java version of its application, with both Chinese and English language support.

CDMA2000 bringing 3G services to China on massive scale

BEIJING, CHINA: At the inaugural CDMA World Forum, the CDMA Development Group (CDG) commented that new 3G wireless voice and mobile broadband service offerings in China are poised to rapidly replace fixed-line solutions, exemplified by subscriber adoption of China Telecom's CDMA2000 1X and EV-DO Revision A (Rev. A) mobile broadband services.

China Telecom is now offering fixed and mobile broadband data services under its "e-surfing" brand, in addition to its existing CDMA2000(r) 1X voice and data services. The operator has already launched 3G CDMA mobile broadband services in more than 120 cities, with plans to cover 324 cities nationwide by July 2009.

By catering to its long-standing enterprise relationships, leveraging its large existing fixed-line customer base and focusing on offering mobile Internet services, China Telecom added 6.8 million CDMA2000 customers in the first four months of 2009 to reach a total of 34.71 million CDMA subscribers.

"China Telecom is showing market leadership through its commitment to bringing 3G CDMA services to China and communicating the value of CDMA2000 voice and mobile broadband services to the Chinese consumer," said Perry LaForge, executive director of the CDG. "A wide selection of affordable 3G CDMA devices is helping China Telecom realize phenomenal subscriber growth, as it leverages the CDMA2000 network to offer wireless voice and broadband data services to both new and existing customers."

Since the restructuring of China's telecom industry in 2008, the country's three wireless operators have been investing heavily in 3G networks across three technologies. China Mobile plans to invest $8.6 billion to expand its TD-SCDMA network in 2009, while China Unicom plans to put $5.6 billion into its recently-launched WCDMA network this year.

China Telecom has announced it plans to spend more than US$11.7 billion on CDMA network expansion and optimization over the next three years, while procuring 55 million CDMA2000 handsets in 2009 to support this rapid growth.

The China Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) expects 3G wireless subscribers in the country to exceed 500 million within the next 3 years, as affordable mobile broadband services replace fixed-line Internet services and expand to rural areas.

Furthermore, an MIIT report predicts that Chinese CDMA subscribers will experience a 30.6 percent compound annual growth rate over the next four years, and that EV-DO subscribers will account for 41.1 percent of China's 3G subscriber base by 2012.

EV-DO Rev. A delivers average download speeds of 600-1400 kbps with bursts up to 3.1 Mbps and average upload speeds of 500-800 kbps with bursts up to 1.8 Mbps.

According to the China Internet Network Information Center (CNNIC), China's Internet penetration rate at the end of 2008 was at 22.6%, surpassing the global rate of 21.9 percent. China's Internet user base was at 298 million users with 279 million broadband users, while the mobile Internet user base doubled in 2008 to surpass 117 million users.

As 90 percent of all Internet users in China are also mobile users, there is enormous growth potential for EV-DO services in the mobile Internet market. This bodes well for China Telecom since its 3G network will be optimized for economical, high-speed broadband performance, and the operator will be able to offer mobile broadband data services to China's large and underserved population at attractive prices.

Aruba's virtual branch network solution for branch offices, teleworkers

BANGALORE, INDIA: Aruba Networks Inc. today announced a series of seminars throughout the Asia Pacific region to introduce its new Virtual Branch Network (VBN) solution. The VBN solution transparently and securely connects remote users with enterprise applications and resources, greatly simplifying the management of branch offices, clinics, home offices, and teleworkers while significantly lowering networking costs.

The solution is also designed for rapidly-deploying business continuity services associated with disaster and pandemic recovery. The seminar series will introduce Aruba's new VBN software for data center-based Aruba Controllers, three new families of wired and wireless Remote Access Points (RAPs) and Branch Office Controllers (BOCs), and four VBN deployment scenarios.

Traditional remote networking solutions replicate routing, switching, firewall, and other services at each remote location. The equipment required is expensive and the services are complex to set-up and manage. Instead of replicating complexity at each remote location, Aruba's VBN solution virtualizes complex tasks at data center controllers and pushes them to inexpensive RAPs and BOCs for execution.

A centrally controlled, policy enforcement firewall in the data center controller governs user access to the network and its resources by pushing policies to dissolvable firewall agents in every RAP and BOC. These agents automatically enforce the policies for every user and service.

Since all of the complex tasks are centrally managed and automatically disseminated, RAP and BOC set-up is quick and easy. Secure one-click installation allows a non-technical person to provision a branch office in minutes, with no intervention or assistance by IT. RAPs and BOCs are transport-independent, and work with virtually any wide-area network -- including 3G cellular -- for instant connectivity. A RAP can literally be mailed to a remote user, connected to power and the WAN, and be fully commissioned following a single data entry.

The three new families of RAPs and BOCs feature policy-based local and remote packet forwarding, and Adaptive Radio Management (ARM) technology for optimized Wi-Fi operation. A diagnostics feature displays status on a simple user interface, and provides one-button debugging and one-button reset to factory defaults. Other key features of the new product families include:

* RAP-2 Family: No larger than a deck of playing cards and designed for use by 1-5 users, the RAP-2 is ideal for teleworkers, micro-branches, and SOHO applications. An 802.11b/g Wi-Fi radio and two Ethernet ports for use with wired devices, such as VoIP phones, are provided;

* RAP-5 Family: The stylish, book-sized RAP-5 includes 5 high-speed Ethernet ports, a USB port for a broadband 3G cellular modem, hardware accelerated encryption, and, optionally, an 802.11n Wi-Fi radio with integrated antennas. The RAP-5 is designed for micro-branches with up to 50 users;

* 600 Branch Office Controller Family: Designed to be a "branch-in-a-box" for offices with up to 256 users, the 600 family offers a broad range of WAN connectivity, network-attached storage, gigabit Ethernet, power-over-Ethernet (PoE), Express Card, and USB options. An integrated 802.11n Wi-Fi radio option rounds out the package. The 600 controllers were recently awarded a Best of Interop 2009 Award.

A single Aruba 6000 Multi-Service Controller equipped with VBN software will support up to 8,000 RAP or 600 series devices, and up to 32,000 users.

"VBN is focused on reducing the cost and complexity of branch office networking, and is one of three Aruba initiatives focused on lowering IT expenses," said Albert Tay, ASEAN and India General Manager, Aruba Network, Inc.

"Another initiative, network rightsizing, targets overbuilt wired LANs by showing users how to lower expenses by using wireless LANs everywhere possible and wired LANs only where they're needed. The third initiative leverages Aruba's AirWave Management Platform to extend the life of existing wireless LANs by providing detailed management, diagnostics, compliance, and Help Desk support missing from proprietary management tools.
