BOLT mobile browser renders 100 millionth page

CAMBRIDGE, USA: Bitstream Inc. today announced that BOLT, the company’'s web browser for mobile phones of all types, has served more than 100 million page views for its users all around the world in the six months since its public debut.

Launched last February, BOLT continues to enjoy a solid adoption growth rate that exceeds 50 percent per month. Since February, the average usage rate of BOLT has tripled with the company’s servers reporting more than 1.4 million pages rendered daily.

BOLT’'s unique capabilities include:
* Fastest browser on the market.
* Displays full websites just as they would appear on desktop computers.
* Streams videos from popular video services such as YouTube.
* Copy and paste text.
* Upload video and photo files directly to websites from BOLT.

"There is no argument that the Internet is an essential part of peoples’ daily lives,” said Anna Chagnon, Bitstream’s president and CEO. “However a problem with the vast majority of mobile phones is that while they are capable of Internet access, they don’t possess browsers that display websites properly.

"Most websites are designed solely with PC viewing in mind, and even with billions of Internet-capable phones in use, a great many of the most popular websites still don’t have mobile companion websites. Of those that do, many lack the full functionality or features that people have come to expect when accessing them from their PCs.

"We believe the fact that BOLT was installed more than one million times in just the first four months since its launch is proof of the market’s desire to bridge this gap between the World Wide Web and mobile platforms."

Optimized to conserve data transmissions, BOLT features unrivaled speed, consistently at least 25 to 50 percent faster than competitors. BOLT offers ultra-fast viewing of streaming and flash video, high standards compliance, rich media and graphics enabling people to view websites just as they do on a PC.

Recent data also includes usage from the new BOLT lite, a new lightweight version of the BOLT mobile browser. Recognizing that some mobile phones currently in use cannot support robust applications and some network providers limit the size of application downloads, Bitstream created BOLT lite -– a smaller application that includes all the essential features of the BOLT mobile browser.

It excludes some of the advanced features to maintain a small application size that can work on lower-end phones and virtually every mobile network. BOLT lite retains BOLT’s feature-rich functionality, best-of-breed download speeds and desktop PC-style page layout.

BOLT mobile browser renders 1mn pages in a single day!

CAMBRIDGE, USA: In the first 24 hours since releasing its newest version of its acclaimed BOLT mobile browser, dubbed Beta3, Bitstream Inc. recorded more than 1 million pages rendered for the first time since BOLT debuted at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona in February 2009.

Since February, BOLT has experienced a steady adoption rate averaging more than 50 percent growth in users per month. Over the last three months the company notes BOLT average usage has nearly tripled.

BOLT burst onto the mobile scene in grand fashion by racking up 1 million installations in just 18 weeks. With new features added in subsequent releases adding to the unique capabilities of this free mobile application, users can now use the “real web” from their mobile phones.

BOLT’s unique capabilities include:
* Fastest browser on the market – routinely at least 25 to 50 percent faster than competitors.
* Displays full websites just as they would appear on desktop computers.
* Watch videos from popular video services such as YouTube.
* Copy and paste text.
* Upload files to websites such as videos and photos.

“There is a lot of talk lately about the so-called ‘mobile Internet,’” said Anna Chagnon, Bitstream’s president and CEO.

“But the reality is that websites and web-based services built for the mobile platform are a very small slice of the ‘real web,’ and many of these mobile sites have far less content or utility than their desktop site companions. So, we designed BOLT not to be a mobile Internet application, but rather an application to see the real web from any type of mobile phone. This approach can extend the reach of the Internet to an estimated 2 billion or more people than those who rely on desktop computers for Internet access.”

Recent data also includes usage from the new BOLT lite, a new light version of the BOLT mobile browser. Recognizing that some mobile phones currently in use cannot support robust applications and some network providers limit the size of application downloads, Bitstream BOLT lite, a smaller application that includes all the essential features of the BOLT mobile browser but excludes some of the advanced features to maintain a small application size that can work on lower-end phones and virtually every mobile network.

BOLT lite retains BOLT’s feature-rich functionality, best-of-breed download speeds and desktop PC-style page layout.

BOLT and BOLT lite are available for free to anyone as part of Bitstream’s public beta test. Visit http://boltbrowser.com to download BOLT today. People who have already installed a previous version of BOLT on their phones will be prompted to download and install the update when they next start the mobile browser.

BOLT mobile browser hits one million installs

CAMBRIDGE, USA: Bitstream Inc. announced that the BOLT mobile browser, the company’s web browser for mobile phones of all types, has passed a major milestone, achieving its one millionth install just 18 weeks -– just over four months –- after its public debut.

The BOLT mobile browser, built to be used on a wide range of mobile phones from simple “feature” phones to more advanced devices such as BlackBerry smartphones, has averaged greater than 50 percent growth in usage each month since the application made its public debut at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona this past February. Since its introduction, BOLT users have consumed more than 22 terabytes (22,000 gigabytes) of data from 61 million web pages.

“It’s been fascinating to see the similarities in how BOLT is being used by people all over the world, despite different geographies, languages and cultures,” said Anna Chagnon, president and CEO of Bitstream. “For example, social networking is extremely popular all around the world. In some countries Facebook is the number one website visited by BOLT users, while in other countries Orkut leads. Even though the web destinations may be different, the usage patterns are strikingly similar all over the globe.”

BOLT users worldwide are discovering that BOLT’s enhanced browsing experience leads them to spend more and more time surfing the Web from their mobile phones. More than 20 percent of BOLT users spend 30 minutes surfing the Internet per session, with more than half of those –- a figure that continues to grow -– spending more than an hour per session. In addition to social networking, search, web-based email and video websites are top ten destinations all around the world.

Built with proprietary compression, navigation and rendering technologies, BOLT enables users to find and read information quickly and easily. Once users have navigated to the specific section of the large web page they are viewing, they can then zoom in to display clear text and images that look crisp on even small mobile phone screens.

People are particularly enjoying the video streaming feature of the BOLT browser –- the only mobile browser that lets people enjoy streaming videos on average mobile phones from such popular video services as YouTube, vids.myspace.com, video.yahoo.com, blip.tv, dailymotion.com, metacafe.com and more. Of the total bandwidth used by all BOLT users surfing the Internet, a substantial portion was consumed by streaming video.

BOLT’s feature set includes:
* Fast, secure, desktop-style web browsing on both high-end and low-end handsets.
* Streaming video capabilities.
* Split screen and full screen modes for easy navigation and viewing.
* Ability to easily add and select favorites and view browsing history.
* Intuitive keystroke shortcuts for easier navigation and content selection.
* Protection against spyware and malicious or faulty add-ons.
* 23:1 compression, which uses less data than competing browsers.

BOLT is available for free to anyone as part of its public beta test. Visit http://boltbrowser.com to download BOLT.

Opera retakes leadership from iPhone in mobile browser market

DUBLIN, IRELAND: Opera is the world's number one mobile browser, overtaking iPhone in May according to data from StatCounter Global Stats. In May Opera took 24.6 percent of the worldwide market compared to 22.3 percent for iPhone. Nokia retains third place with 17.9 percent. However, if one includes iPod Touch then Apple browsers still lead with iPod Touch alone taking 14.9 percent of the market in May.

StatCounter, which provides free website traffic analysis, is one of the largest web analytics companies in the world recording in excess of ten billion pageloads per month. In March it launched StatCounter Global Stats, a free online service which captures market share of search engines, browsers and operating systems including mobile.

"Opera began the year in number one slot but iPhone overtook it in February. May saw Opera regain the number one position," commented Aodhan Cullen, CEO and founder of StatCounter. "It will be fascinating to watch how this battle plays out over the year."

He drew attention to the performance of BlackBerry which is in fourth place with 6.9% of the global market. "An interesting finding is that BlackBerry has steadily increased market share from 4.9 percent in January to 6.9 percent in May. Despite the global recession it looks as if executives are holding on to their BlackBerries," commented Cullen.

The StatCounter research data is based on four billion pageloads per month. Other regional and country breakdowns can be viewed at: http://gs.statcounter.com
