DUBLIN, IRELAND: Research and Markets has announced the addition of the "The Future of Triple-Play: Growth Opportunities, Key Challenges and Competitive Strategies" report to its offering.
Cable operations and fixed-line telecoms operators continue their battle over a superior share in the triple-play arena. However, mobile operators have shown their interest in seizing a piece of the market while satellite TV providers are also complementing their core services with fixed-line offerings.
The future of pure-play providers appears limited, as the credit crunch places further pressure on consumers to seek the most cost effective way of obtaining the services they need.
'The Future of Triple-Play: Growth opportunities, key challenges and competitive strategies' is a report that examines the market opportunities and challenges for triple-play services.
The report analyzes the market conditions that have driven the deployment of triple-play services, and the strategies employed by leading service providers. It identifies the challenges faced by companies, and also provides recommendations into how to best counter competitive threats, extend service portfolios, and boost revenue potential in this rapidly evolving market.
Key findings:
* The popularity of mobile telephony is expected to continue to rise over the next four years. There will be over 5.6 billion mobile connections worldwide by the end of 2013, a 68 percent increase over 2007.
* Mobile broadband will be a substitute for fixed-line services in markets where fixed-line infrastructure has not been widely deployed. There will be an estimated 258 million mobile broadband notebook users in 2014, with consumers accounting for almost 200 million of these connections.
* It is forecast that there will be 64 million IPTV subscribers by the end of 2012, an almost six fold increase over 2007 levels.
* The average consumer is not motivated by new technological offerings. Price is much more important to most than the availability of advanced services such as VOD, DVRs and high definition programming.

Triple play triumph for Broadband Forum!
UK: Quality of Service on IPTV networks, for both operators and their customers worldwide, can now be greatly improved thanks to the efforts of a dedicated team of experts at the Broadband Forum.
The approval and release of "Splitter Testing" Technical Report 127 (TR-127) creates -– for the first time -– the opportunity for network operators and independent test labs to carry out a system level test across four key IPTV network elements; the DSLAM, the CPE modem, the Central Office Splitter and the CPE Splitter. Testing splitters as part of a complete system assures the new TR-127 compliant splitters will prevent disturbance of the video signal by a telephone signal on the same line.
“Video signal interruption by on-hook, off-hook telephone usage has plagued Triple Play delivery since the concept first became reality,” explained Broadband Forum Chief Operating Officer Robin Mersh. “I’m absolutely delighted that after such a thorough effort by our Testing and Interoperability Working Group we are able to help the industry and its customers deal with this issue.”
The new TR-127 enables high quality delivery of triple play services by maximizing the interoperability of splitters and in-line filters with xDSL transceivers in an active, dynamic telephony environment, including the previously troublesome on-hook, off-hook, ringing, and ring trip events.
TR-127 addresses VDSL2 technology as well as ADSL2/2plus, and relates to the previously issued Technical Report 100 (TR-100), which covered ADSL2/ADSL2plus Performance Test Plans.
The Broadband Forum sees TR-127 being used as a new reference criterion for the specifications of splitter equipment and testing worldwide. Among the drivers for this series of dynamic splitter tests were:
· Telephone ringing and answering (Ring trip) events had been proven to have an adverse effect on the quality of IPTV services.
· VDSL2 and ADSL2plus needed separate dynamic test procedures.
· There was a need to analyze how splitters might affect the xDSL performance, in terms of achievable bitrate and margin.
The TR-127 addresses these issues with dynamic splitter test procedures. Splitters compliant with these requirements will offer significant reduction of IPTV pixelization on the TV screen image and will eliminate the “re-starting” of the DSL modem. The result is that service providers and customers will soon be able to request TR-127 tested splitters, which deliver better picture quality and a more robust service.

Vernon selects Extreme's BlackDiamond 20K for triple-play services
NEW DELHI, INDIA: Extreme Networks Inc. announced that the Vernon Telephone Co-operative, an independent local exchange carrier servicing customers in southwestern Wisconsin, has selected its Carrier Ethernet solutions, including the most recently announced purpose-built metro Ethernet transport switch, the BlackDiamond 20808, to deliver triple-play services to its 7,000 customers in nine rural communities.
With an increased number of customers turning to the provider for all of their communications needs, Vernon Telephone Co-operative needed to be proactive and bolster its infrastructure’s core and edge with equipment that offers the reliability and stability its customers had come to expect from it.
