Spending in China propels Huawei to near tie with Alcatel-Lucent

UK: Ovum today announced its preliminary 2Q09 results for global optical equipment networking vendors. The global optical networking (ON) market, led by strength in Asia-Pacific markets, was $3.9 billion, up 11 percent sequentially, but down 9 percent compared with 2Q08.

“This marks the third consecutive quarter that the ON market has shrunk compared with the year-ago quarter, but given the global economic conditions we were not surprised,” remarked Ron Kline, Ovum’s Research Director, Optical Networking.

“Spending in Asia-Pacific remained surprisingly strong, driven by 3G network builds in China. The level of spending we’re seeing in China has disproportionally benefitted Huawei and ZTE, adding over a share point each to their market positions, and has brought Huawei to the verge of market leadership, an event we think very likely for 3Q09.”

Top 10 ON vendor share
Of the top 10 vendors, only Huawei and ZTE posted both sequential and year-over-year revenue gains, reflecting the surge in spending in their home market.

Alcatel-Lucent and Ericsson posted sequential revenue gains but were still off 22 percent and 18 percent from the year-ago period, while Ciena, Fujitsu, NEC, Nokia Siemens, Nortel, and Tellabs all declined sequentially and year over year. Huawei and ZTE grew revenues by 21 percent and 62 percent, respectively, over 2Q08 due to 3G mobile-related aggregation spending in China.

“Alcatel-Lucent held on to the market lead with 20.7 percent annualized share, but Huawei picked up 1.4 percentage points to come within just 0.2 points of the market leader at 20.5 percent share,” said Kline.

“Given the continued strength of spending in China where Huawei is strong, favorable exchange rates, light exposure to North America, and access to capital, it’s only a matter of time before we have a new market leader.”

Huawei opens LTE lab in North America

PLANO, USA: Huawei has announced the opening of a Long Term Evolution (LTE) laboratory located in Richardson, Texas.

Operators and industry partners in North America are now able to further explore the potential of LTE technology and experience Huawei's latest LTE solutions.

Initially established with prototype equipment in fall of 2008, the facility has been upgraded to fully support commercial product releases for North America. The lab recently implemented Huawei’s first commercial LTE solution release targeted at operators in the United States and Canada.

Additionally, local R&D teams are now able to work more closely with North American operators to rigorously test LTE systems before delivery.

"It is a key step forward in our readiness to support customers launching LTE in the United States and Canada with local facilities and resources," said Carl Liu, Executive Vice President of Huawei North America.

"Building on the LTE field trial we did in AWS (Advanced Wireless Services) spectrum in the US last year, we are very pleased to be able to offer the latest in LTE multi-band technology as carriers partner with Huawei to deliver advanced mobile broadband services."

The state-of-the-art lab is equipped with Huawei's SingleRAN DBS3900 eNodeB, USN 9810 unified service node, UGW 9811 unified gateway, M2000 element management system and the latest versions of commercial software.

Huawei's industry-leading SingleRAN solution incorporates software-defined radio technology to support CDMA/LTE and UMTS/LTE dual-mode operation, which Huawei first demonstrated in AWS spectrum at CTIA Wireless 2008.

Huawei leads industry with SingleRAN solution

BANGALORE, INDIA: Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd has shipped over 1.5 million transceivers (TRXs) for its fourth-generation base stations - more than any other company in the world. This significant milestone was reached nearly a year earlier than expected, demonstrating the enormous demand for innovative next-generation wireless network solutions.

Huawei’s unique SingleRAN solution enables operators to achieve full convergence of multi-mode wireless networks, including base stations, base station controllers, sites and operation and maintenance management. As a core component of its SingleRAN solution, the fourth-generation BTS supports multi-mode radio access networking (GSM, TD-SCDMA, UMTS, LTE, CDMA and WiMAX), and incorporates green optimization and All-IP technologies, providing a truly convergent solution for network operators.

“Network convergence -- including the smooth evolution to future technologies and the total cost of ownership savings it brings -- has become a very real requirement for mobile operators,” said Peter Jarich, Research Director with Current Analysis.

“Today, many operators can claim multi-standard base station solution, embracing 2G through 4G, and 3GPP as well as 3GPP2 technologies, Huawei has led the most recent charge, with enviable momentum being the result.”

With the rapid development of various wireless standards, the need to support multi-mode technology is expected for a long period of time. Thus, cost of investment, operation and maintenance will invariably increase as operators would have to operate two or more networks simultaneously.

Wan Biao, President of Huawei Wireless Product Line expects demand for Huawei’s SingleRAN solutions to further garner momentum in 2009 as more operators begins to capitalize on its superior value proposition.

He said: “Huawei is committed to creating maximum value for our customers and the record breaking shipment of over 1.5 million transceivers is a testament to our focus on customer-centric innovation. We are excited to be now working with so many leading operators worldwide and we will continue to respond quickly to their requirements with solutions that integrate innovation, quality and value.”

Huawei’s fourth-generation BTS are being used by more than 20 leading operators in 100 countries. In March 2008, Telefonica/O2 chose Huawei to expand and upgrade its mobile network in Germany and Huawei has assisted in the replacement of existing base stations and the planned deployment of more than 8,000 fourth-generation BTS. In August 2008, T-Mobile used approximately 4,500 Huawei fourth-generation BTS to modernize their existing 2G network in the Czech Republic.

At CommunicAsia 2009, Huawei answers Asia Pacific operators call for greater convergence with its SingleRAN solution, which was given prominent space and attention at its 200-sq m exhibition booth at Hall 4 of Singapore Expo.

Seachange achieves distinction in TL 9000 telecom standard certification

ACTON, USA: SeaChange International Inc. announced that it has achieved TL 9000 certification across multiple company locations –- in less than two years -– during a period of vigorous global expansion marked by the establishment of new facilities in several countries, a company acquisition and significant growth in its employee base.

The video-on-demand, IPTV and advertising systems leader joins only three other companies worldwide (including Alcatel-Lucent Shanghai Bell, Huawei Technologies, and ZTE Corp.) currently holding a TL 9000 certification (TL12957) for hardware, software and service to product category 1.2.7 application servers.

The QuEST Forum, a consortium of telecommunications suppliers and service providers, developed the TL 9000 standard using the framework of the ISO 9000 international standard as a basis to pursue a goal of global telecommunications quality and industry-wide performance excellence.

SeaChange affirmed its permanent commitment to the standard by appointing a full-time TL 9000 manager to supervise a robust internal audit program and 16 auditors representing company departments and locations globally.

“SeaChange has fully embraced a commitment to develop and implement standards throughout its history as a basic and vital means to bring digital television into widespread reality,” said Bill Styslinger, CEO, SeaChange. “I congratulate the entire SeaChange organization for its dedication in achieving TL 9000 certification. We’re confident that implementing a TL 9000-based quality management system will contribute to our further progress with telco customers globally.”

SeaChange’s telco video-on-demand, IPTV and advertising customers are among the world’s largest and best known operators. TL 9000 will benefit the full span of SeaChange software and hardware solutions for video storage and streaming, settop box applications and middleware, as well as its global 24x7 customer support organization and professional services organization. TL 9000 will also benefit the comprehensive content management services of SeaChange subsidiary On Demand Group in its provisioning of content ingest, preparation, aggregation, processing and publishing, as well as service management, including retail marketing of content within the on-demand television environment.

The TL 9000 standard defines system requirements for the design, development, production, delivery, installation and maintenance of telecom products and services and provides a measurement system that allows companies to track performance and improve results. It eliminates the need for multiple quality management standards, which reduces the cost of doing business and ultimately results in better products and services to consumers. Further, it provides a consistent set of quality expectations to drive efficiency and performance across the global telecom supply chain. TL 9000 Certification is granted following an in-depth audit process to confirm conformance to the industry requirements. SeaChange’s certification was granted by National Quality Assurance (NQA).
