Croatian Optima Telecom and SmartLabs to deliver next-gen interactive TV services
ZAGREB, CROATIA: SmartLabs announced that, in partnership with the Optima Telecom, Сroatia's second largest fixed line, Internet and Pay-TV provider, they have upgraded the OptiTV service and deployed a next generation end-to-end SmartLabs Interactive TV Solution.
More than 20 companies took part in the Optima Telecom tender process and after completing an extensive and detailed selection process, an end-to-end solution from SmartLabs was selected. The SmartLabs solution included a service delivery platform (SmartTUBE SDP), video infrastructure (SmartMEDIA), an advanced user interface (SmartTUBE UI) and the SML-482 STBs.
Whilst the SML-482 STB has been selected for new customers, a critical feature of the project was the migration of existing Optima Telecom customers from the legacy interactive TV platform to the new service, built on the SmartLabs solution, without changing their STBs. The new solution has been rapidly implemented and the customer migration process is now underway and legacy STBs, from STB providers Telsey and Albis, are fully supported on the new platform.
Ensuring support for legacy STBs enabled Optima Telecom to substantially reduce the capital expenditure involved in deploying a next generation Interactive TV solution whilst providing its valued existing customers a completely new TV viewing experience with the minimum amount of fuss.

Quantenna and MediaTek to lead 802.11ac MU-MIMO interoperability
AMSTERDAM, THE NETHERLANDS: Quantenna Communications Inc. has announced in advance of IBC 2014 that it has achieved 802.11ac Multi-User Multiple-Input-and-Multiple-Output (MU-MIMO) interoperability in cooperation with MediaTek, a worldwide market leader in innovative chipsets for Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, cellular 3G/LTE, and HDTV.
The companies have been working closely together on product interoperability testing and are showing how MU-MIMO improves user experience while optimizing network efficiency to conserve precious spectrum resources.
The full potential of today’s MIMO access points is not being realized due to the dominance of simple mobile devices and challenging channel conditions. With MU-MIMO, which allows concurrent transmissions from massive/high order MIMO access points to multiple lower order clients like single antenna mobile devices, spectral efficiency and network performance can both be significantly increased. The improvements in spectral efficiency result in higher performance in the same channels.

Smartphones to account for two thirds of world’s mobile market by 2020
LONDON, ENGLAND: Smartphones will account for two out of every three mobile connections globally by 2020, according to a major new report by GSMA Intelligence, the research arm of the GSMA.
The new study, “Smartphone forecasts and assumptions, 2007-2020”, finds that smartphones account for one in three mobile connections today, representing more than two billion mobile connections. It forecasts that the number of smartphone connections will grow three-fold over the next six years, reaching six billion by 2020, accounting for two-thirds of the nine billion mobile connections by that time.
Basic phones, feature phones and data terminals such as tablets, dongles and routers will account for the remaining connections. The study excludes M2M from the connections totals.
“The smartphone has sparked a wave of global innovation that has brought new services to millions and efficiencies to businesses of every type,” said Hyunmi Yang, chief strategy officer at the GSMA. “As the study released today shows, smartphones will be the driving force of mobile industry growth over the next six years, with one billion new smartphone connections expected over the next 18 months alone.
“In the hands of consumers, these devices are improving living standards and changing lives, especially in developing markets, while contributing to growing economies by stimulating entrepreneurship. As the industry evolves, smartphones are becoming lifestyle hubs that are creating opportunities for mobile industry players in vertical markets such as financial services, healthcare, home automation and transport.”
