PARIS, FRANCE: 4G chipmaker Sequans Communications S.A. is providing the LTE semiconductor solution for customer devices for SKY Brasil’s TD-LTE network that launched December 13 in Brasilia.
SKY Brasil’s network is the first LTE network in Brazil and Brasilia is the first city to receive service in what will become a nationwide broadband network. SKY Brasil, a subsidiary of DirecTV, was founded in 1996 as a direct broadcast satellite service provider and last year won a license to provide LTE service in Brazil in the 2.5 GHz band. Sequans has long experience in TD-LTE with its technology operating in TD-LTE trial networks since May of 2010.
“SKY’s mission to build a nationwide LTE network is truly groundbreaking,” said Georges Karam, Sequans’ CEO. “It will benefit Brazilians tremendously, bringing advanced high speed connectivity to millions, and we are honored to contribute our technology to such an important project.”

The consumer device SKY Brasil is offering its customers is an indoor desktop unit that supports LTE, Ethernet and Wi-Fi. It is based on Sequans’ SQN3010 TD-LTE chip that is 3GPP R8 compliant, capable of delivering up to 100 megabits per second of throughput.

LTE mobile broadband pricing to fall substantially
UK: A new report published by Tariff Consultancy Ltd (TCL) called LTE Mobile Broadband Pricing 2012 finds that LTE Mobile Broadband pricing will fall substantially over the five-year period to the end of 2016.
LTE Mobile Broadband Pricing 2012 evaluates pricing from around 30 LTE Mobile Broadband providers which are mainly located in Europe, North America and the Asia-Pacific regions of the world. It finds that LTE is currently being promoted as a premium Mobile Broadband product based on a high theoretical download access speed. The average theoretical download access speed across all LTE providers is in excess of 80 Mbps, with the most common download speed cited being 100 Mbps – and one provider (Zain Saudi Arabia) claiming download speeds of as high as 150 Mbps. It is the high download access speeds that are the main differentiator for LTE against other types of Mobile Broadband.
Average monthly user data allowances for LTE Mobile Broadband services are currently 22 GB per month – but can be as high as 80 GB per month with allowances for LTE operators in North America being typically lower.
From the TCL study six LTE providers offer separately an “unlimited” monthly user data allowance which is generally subject to an operators’ Fair Usage Policy (FUP). The initiative indicates that currently the LTE Mobile Broadband service is being positioned as a premium product, and is not currently subject to the same usage constraints that can face the 3G Mobile Broadband product, at least in the short term.
TCL research finds that the average price worldwide for a top of the range LTE Mobile Broadband service is currently 50 Euro per month, typically based on a Post Paid 24 month contract term.
The TCL study shows that the average " LTE Mobile Broadband price in Euro per GB ranges from 0.5 Euro up to 9.9 Euro per GB of data mobile user allowance. " Most LTE operators reduce the service access speed (down to speeds as low as 64 Kbps) when the monthly user data allowance is reached, with the speed reduction particularly prevalent in Europe.
But already there is evidence of price erosion from selected LTE Mobile Broadband providers. Telstra (Australia) currently offers its BigPond USB 4G Mobile Broadband product with an 8 GB monthly data user allowance for the equivalent of 30 Euro per month, against 38 Euro for a 4 GB monthly data user allowance reported at the time of launch. And in Singapore M1 (Mobile One) is offering its Next Generation Mobile Network equivalent LTE service to existing M1 customers with a 40 percent discount off the monthly list price.
TCL anticipates that LTE Mobile Broadband pricing will decline as more operators worldwide adopt the technology worldwide. As of the end of 2011 around 60 percent of commercial LTE services have been launched so far in Europe. Into 2012 more LTE networks will be launched in other regions including the Asia Pacific and South America with LTE pricing set to become more competitive as LTE becomes a mass market service and enters other consumer segments using increased download access speeds as a key differentiator.

NI releases wireless I/O for NI CompactRIO
USA: National Instruments announced a new wireless gateway and three new measurement nodes that extend the capabilities of the NI wireless sensor network (WSN) platform and illustrate the company’s commitment to wireless measurement technology.
Through the NI LabVIEW graphical development environment, engineers can use the new WSN gateway to easily integrate wired and wireless measurement and control systems and program WSN nodes to perform local control, data analysis and event-based alarming or notification. The new devices offer increased performance and expanded connectivity to thousands of sensors and instruments.
Engineers can insert the NI 9795 C Series gateway into any available slot in a CompactRIO chassis to complement existing measurement and control systems with wireless I/O. With a similar software experience, combining wired CompactRIO monitoring and control systems with distributed WSN measurements is easier than ever. Centec adds design wins for packet transport solution

The new offerings span the widest range of tablets, including the iPad. The software allows employees to more effectively collaborate and share data, images and conduct meeting and on the fly more securely as part of their everyday work experience.
The use of tablets in business is on the rise. Increasingly, employees require enterprise connectivity from their personal smartphones and tablet devices, also known as the "Bring Your Own Device" to work trend. A recent IBM study revealed that 73 percent of business leaders surveyed currently allow mobile devices or tablets to connect to their corporate networks.

Social networking for iPad: Available from the Apple app store at no charge for existing IBM Connections users, the new app includes a new interface ideal for tablet devices allowing for unique document editing capabilities.
Attend Online Meetings: Employees can attend on-line meetings from their tablets anytime, anyplace. Available on Android, BlackBerry, iPad, and iPhone devices, LotusLive Meeting users can view shared presentations, chat with meeting participants, and virtually raise and lower hands from tablets and other mobile devices. IBM Sametime software users can also lead, participate in and manage browser-based meetings from their iPad or Android tablets.
Instant messaging: New mobile apps for iPad and Android enable IBM Sametime users to use tablets to take immediate action on urgent business tasks by providing one-on-one or group instant messaging, background notifications, and the ability to send photos through the chat window.
Access business documents: Available now in app stores, IBM Lotus Symphony Viewers allow mail users to view any ODF-based document, spreadsheet and presentation on their iPad, iPhone or Android device.
Reduce calling costs: IBM Sametime Unified Telephony on tablets allows a user to initiate calls to whatever phone happens to be nearby by controlling call routing preferences and device selection as well as have his one unified number appear in caller ID.
Easier access to mail and calendar: IBM Lotus Notes Traveler now allows IBM mail users to easily add widgets to their Android home screens for quick, convenient access to mail and calendar, and allows users to call people listed in their calendar views with just one click.
