Kotura unveils low-power 100 Gb/s optical engine

MONTEREY PARK, USA: Next week at OFC/NFOEC 2012, silicon photonics innovator Kotura, Inc. will demonstrate its low-power 100 gigabits per second (Gb/s) optical engine to support the interconnect fabric for next generation data centers and high performance computers (HPC).

The new optical engine chips are based on Kotura’s micron scale manufacturing platform currently in mass production and deployed in live networks around the world since 2006. With three of the five largest telecommunication OEMs already using Kotura products in their 10, 40 and 100 Gb/s networks, the company is approaching a million channels per year currently in production.

Kotura’s silicon photonics platform supports optical engines using Wave Division Multiplexing (WDM), in which different signals can share the same path. As the only silicon photonics provider to offer WDM, Kotura’s optical engine provides distinct advantages, including reducing the cost of fiber and associated connectors within the interconnect fabric for 4x25 GHz solutions by a factor of four, as well as readily expanding from four channels to eight, 16 or even 40 channels over a single strand of optical fiber. Additionally, Kotura’s silicon photonics platform also supports optical engines using parallel fiber channels.

“The optical engine provides our customers with an inexpensive, small form factor that reduces power consumption and provides a high level of integration,” said Mehdi Asghari, CTO of Kotura.

As Kotura’s platform is capable of high yield manufacturing, attractive price volume curves can be achieved. Kotura has integrated important functionalities – such as flip chip attached lasers, high performance WDM de/multiplexers, fast low power modulators and high-speed detectors – into a single pair of silicon chips eliminating the need for hundreds of piece parts and dozens of assembly steps.

The Kotura optical engine is so small that a 100 Gb/s transceiver will easily fit inside a QSFP package, the smallest 40G package on the market today, greatly increasing the panel density of 100 Gb/s transceivers.

“We are in the early stages of a market with huge potential,” said Brad Smith, senior VP at Lightcounting, a market research analyst firm tracking high-speed interconnects. “100G in a QSFP package over a single strand of single-mode fiber is exactly what the HPC, traditional data center and switch/routing infrastructure is looking for to support next generation systems and to gear up for the ‘exa-flood’ of data coming.”

Finding fast enough interconnects has become the limiting factor for the entire industry. With 10 core microprocessors, four per server, virtualization and 48-60 servers per rack, the aggregate bandwidth at the top-of-rack switch will hit 480-600G. This will require four to five 10G up links per rack and large data centers using 200-500 racks.

According to Smith, the advantages of silicon photonics are enormous, enabling long-haul optical WDM to move to the server and switch rack. Silicon photonics and WDM allow modulation speed to bump up to 40G/50G and more channels in the future without having to upgrade the entire fiber plant.

As part of Kotura’s optical engine demo at OFC, Anritsu will be using its bit error rate tester, the MP1800A, to support 100 Gb/s networking applications. A world leader in high-speed test instrumentation, Anritsu was selected for the demonstration because the MP1800A is a modular BERT with a built-in Pulse Pattern Generator (PPG) that supports output of high-quality, low intrinsic jitter signals, as well as a built-in Error Detector (ED) with high input sensitivity of 10 mV. The MP1800A also supports signal analyses, including bathtub and Q measurements.

Booming iPhone and iPad sales make gyroscopes top consumer and mobile MEMS device in 2011

EL SEGUNDO, USA: Gyroscopes were the top revenue generator in 2011 in the dominant consumer and mobile segment of the microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) market, thanks to record sales of Apple Inc.’s iPhone and iPad devices from during the final quarter of last year. Gyroscopes netted $655.4 million in 2011, up a notable 66 percent from $394.5 million in 2010, according to an IHS iSuppli MEMS Market Tracker report.

Long a runner-up in its category, gyroscopes finally displaced accelerometers last year to become the revenue champion in consumer and mobile MEMS. Gyroscopes will continue to reap top revenue honors in the next few years, taking in $1.1 billion by 2015, as shown in the figure attached, well ahead of accelerometers at $705 million.Source: IHS iSuppli, USA.

The newfound prominence of gyroscopes means the devices last year accounted for 41 percent of revenue for all kinds of motion sensors in consumer and mobile applications including accelerometers and electronic compasses, pegged at $1.6 billion. This compared to a 24 percent share in 2010 when overall motion sensor revenue stood at $1.1 billion.

The rise of gyroscopes to the top was in large part due to the boom in 3-axis versions of the device, used mostly in tandem with 3-axis accelerometers for more accurate motion sensing. While accelerometers are responsible for correctly orienting phones and tablets to the viewer’s perspective whether the devices are held vertically or horizontally, gyroscopes improve the motion-based interface, especially for gaming. Emerging applications for gyroscopes in smartphones also include optical image stabilization and navigation-related functions.

Smartphones and media tablets are by far the main adopters of the 3-axis gyroscope, and the blockbuster sales of the iPhone and iPad in the fourth quarter of 2011 boosted the 3-axis gyroscope market,” said Jérémie Bouchaud, director and senior principal analyst for MEMS & sensors at IHS. “Of the $655 million total revenue generated by the gyroscope space, the 3-axis segment accounted for $462 million, or 71 percent. Apple was the main consumer, accounting for 62 percent consumption of 3-axis gyroscopes, with other manufacturers like Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics also ramping up their adoption of the device last year.”

Among suppliers, STMicroelectronics was the leading producer of both gyroscopes and accelerometers, with Apple accounting for half of the company’s MEMS business in 2011. STMicroelectronics is the sole supplier of gyroscopes and accelerometers for the iPhone and iPad.

Moving forward, configurations known as 6-axis inertial measurement units (IMU) featuring three accelerometers and three gyroscopes in one “combo” package will dominate in the sales of 3-axis gyroscopes by 2014 at the latest. Altering the market landscape for combo sensors also is a slew of recent product announcements for surprisingly compact 6-axis compass modules comprising a compass and an accelerometer in the same package, as well as 9-axis IMUs with 3-axis electronic compasses added to 6-axis IMUs. Bosch Sensortec and InvenSense have introduced a 6-axis compass module and a 9-axis IMU, respectively, with a very small form factor.

New applications of motion sensors
In general, motion sensors like gyroscopes, accelerometers and electronic compasses will continue to rule consumer and mobile MEMS, the largest segment of an industry that includes other MEMS sectors such as automotive, medical, industrial, and aerospace and defense.

Aside from their use now in smartphones and tablets, motion sensors are seeing new opportunities emerge in areas like TV remote control applications, as well as in the super-thin ultrabook laptops promoted by Intel Corp. New generations of remote controls, such as those from California-based Roku, already include a 9-axis mix of either discrete or combo sensors—a format expected to spread rapidly.

For its part, Intel is recommending the use of accelerometers, gyroscopes, electronic compasses and even pressure sensors for manufacturers of the company’s ultrabooks, even though IHS believes that the combination of gyroscopes and compasses will be present mostly in “convertible” ultrabooks—those with a screen that can be flipped back to form a tablet—and not in all Ultrabooks.

By 2015, both TV remote control and ultrabook applications will add another $155 million in revenue derived from the use of accelerometers, gyroscopes and electronic compasses, up from a mere $9 million in 2011.

MEMS microphones set to make more noise
Based also on their use in the iPhone and iPad, MEMS microphones likewise saw rapid growth last year in consumer and mobile MEMS. Apple uses two analog MEMS microphones in the iPhone 4 and 4S, along with one MEMS microphone in the headset that is sold with the phone. In addition, one digital MEMS microphone is present in the iPad 2.
MEMS microphones are particularly important for noise suppression when using the Siri voice command feature in the iPhone 4S.

All told, revenue in 2011 for MEMS microphones reached $373 million, up 67 percent from $223 million in 2010. Knowles Electronics still dominates the MEMS microphone sphere, but its share of shipments in the overall market has fallen from 88 percent in 2010 to 75 percent last year. Several suppliers had a breakthrough in 2011, and there are now eight suppliers that each produce more than 10 million MEMS microphone units, up from just three in 2010.

In another area, MEMS oscillators recently saw a surge of interest arise in the space with the entry of three big players. Murata, an established supplier of ceramic oscillators, acquired VTI Technologies in October last year. Meanwhile, IDT—the leading manufacturer of complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) timing, introduced its first MEMS timing product in November, as did NXP—a supplier of real-time clocks—during this year’s Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. Such developments will help boost the credibility of MEMS as a viable alternative to quartz in the timing area, IHS believes.

Ciena widens leadership in high speed optics with innovative WaveLogic 3 technology

OFC/NFOEC 2012, LINTHICUM, USA: Ciena Corp. announced WaveLogic 3, the industry’s first software-programmable coherent technology that scales to 400 Gb/s. This new generation of the company’s family of silicon chips will enable service providers to accelerate the move to dynamic, software-defined Terabit networking while improving network economics.

Beyond scaling bandwidth and lowering costs, WaveLogic-powered networks can be programmed to quickly respond and adapt to changing requirements for capacity, reach and latency. The new technology that underpins Ciena’s WaveLogic 3 changes the game in optical networking by making the optical layer more intelligent and responsive to application needs—an increasingly critical requirement in today’s dynamic and cloud-centric networks.

* WaveLogic 3 adds unprecedented intelligence to networks with software-programmable technology that enables network operators to constantly monitor optical transmission performance, and rapidly respond to network demands. WaveLogic 3 will help optimize existing optical networks for a wide range of applications—including low latency—over metro, ultra-long haul or trans-Pacific submarine distances, at speeds that scale from 100 Gb/s to 400 Gb/s.

Technology enhancements
Specific WaveLogic 3 design improvements include:

Industry-first transmit DSP—Ciena has integrated digital signal processing in the transmitter (Tx DSP) to deliver unprecedented service flexibility with sophisticated programmable modulation, including the industry’s first 16QAM,which is essential to delivering greater than 100 Gb/s speeds, and allows operators to adjust network settings to meet varying reach and capacity demands. Spectral shaping reduces network cost by improving system margin in metro environments, and pre-compensation allows service providers to run higher capacity services over older fiber links, maximizing network investment.

Soft FEC—Ciena’s new intelligent soft-decision forward error correction (soft FEC) algorithm significantly extends maximum service reach and enables practical deployment of higher capacity (>100G) systems. The Soft FEC in WaveLogic 3 is software-programmable, allowing operators to adjust for latency and reach, depending on application needs.

Next-generation DSP receiver—Ciena’s completely redesigned DSP receiver achieves 75 trillion operations per second—six times the processing power of WaveLogic 2. An advanced 32 nm CMOS process is used to provide the highest level of integration with lower power consumption Additional enhancements in PMD compensation ensure better performance in existing networks with non-optimal fiber conditions, allowing customers to extract more capacity out of their existing infrastructure rather than incurring the cost and complexity of laying new fiber.

ColorChip launches QSFP+ OTU-3 line rate transceiver module

CAESAREA, ISRAEL: ColorChip, a world leading innovator in high speed optical networking and communications technology, announced sample availability of its quad small form factor pluggable plus (QSFP+) OTU-3 line rate transceiver module.

The new pluggable transceiver is designed to meet increasing bandwidth demand in today's data intensive applications. ColorChip QSFP+ OTU-3 module, which uses single mode optics has a line rate of 43.01Gbit/s and designed to work over a distance up to 10km, will be on display in the ColorChip booth during OFC/NFOEC, March 6-8, 2012, at the Los Angeles Convention Center

The 40GbE QSFP+ OTU-3 module extends the existing 40G QSFP+ family of products offered by ColorChip including the 40GBASE-LR4 QSFP+ IEEE 802.3ba compliant module. ColorChip introduced the IEEE 802.ba product line 2 years ago and has been in production over the last 6 months shipping thousands of modules. The product line offers OEMs a lower cost, longer reach alternative to traditional 40G Sonet/SDH client interfaces and makes 40G deployments even more economically viable in high speed switches and edge routers.

ColorChip 40GbE QSFP+ OTU-3 module will go into production in the second half of 2012.

TeliaSonera acquires Svenska Stadsnät AB

STOCKHOLM, SWEDEN: TeliaSonera has acquireq all shares in Svenska Stadsnät AB, a company providing fiber capacity to municipalities, companies and households. The price for the acquisition is not disclosed.

For 2011 net sales in Svenska Stadsnät amounted to SEK 53 million. The company has operations in seven municipalities: Laholm, Svalöv, Örkelljunga, Karlshamn, Gislaved, Gnosjö and Mölndal. The company has 14 employees in Gislaved, Mölndal and Landskrona.

"Svenska Stadsnät has an open-minded and customer focused culture where service providers can act in an open competitive environment and at equal terms, which is in line with our ambitions. Their network complements our network very well, and Svenska Stadsnät has successfully established good relations with the municipalities," says Malin Frenning, president of Business area Broadband Services in TeliaSonera.

The possibility to deliver high capacity to many Swedes in an open fiber network is the core of the development of the fiber market, an ambition in common for TeliaSonera and Svenska Stadsnät.

"With TeliaSonera as a new owner, our business will get the financial resources that a future roll-out requires. As TeliaSonera develops its open model even further, our network and employees will get into the right environment," says Börje Andersson, chairman of the Board of Svenska Stadsnät.

TeliaSonera’s wholly-owned subsidiary Skanova will take the operational control in the business and consolidate Svenska Stadsnät into its reporting. Initially, the business will continue as today. Over time the framework will be evaluated and developed with the aim to give both TeliaSonera’s and Svenska Stadsnät’s customers a high quality experience. The current management will continue to develop the company’s business concept and Jimmy Andreasson, CEO of Svenska Stadsnät, will take part in the management team of Skanova.

Cable broadband market sees massive growth in CMTS ports; Cisco nears all-time market share high

CAMPBELL, USA: Market research firm Infonetics Research released excerpts from its fourth quarter (4Q11) CMTS and Edge QAM Hardware and Subscribers market share and forecast report, which tracks cable broadband equipment and subscribers.

“The cable broadband market ended 2011 on a high note, both for the quarter and the year and both for revenue and port shipments. Even though Verizon and AT&T have slowed their fixed broadband network rollouts, North American MSOs are continuing theirs, resulting in 94 percent total CMTS port growth in the region in 2011. In fact, every region saw port growth in 2011, as cable operators worldwide continue their DOCSIS 3.0 transformations,” notes Jeff Heynen, directing analyst for broadband access and video at Infonetics Research.

CMTS and EDGE QAM market highlights
* Combined CMTS and edge QAM revenue grew 5 percent in the final quarter of 2011, ending the year on a high note, up 17 percent from the year-ago quarter.

* For the full year, CMTS and edge QAM manufacturer revenue is up 6 percent to $1.7 billion.

* Global CMTS port shipments hit record levels in 4Q11 and are up an astounding 48 percent for the full year.

* CMTS revenue is not keeping pace with port shipments because revenue per downstream continues to drop (down 31 percent in 2011), as more high-density downstream-only cards are introduced and as the market continues to shift towards license-based upgrades in regions outside North America.

* Cisco is the only of the four CMTS equipment leaders that gained CMTS revenue market share in 2011, growing from 51 percent to 59 percent of the global market, just one point shy of its all-time high.
